Changes to 5.0 V8 between 1996-2001

I noticed EPA fuel economy ratings are slightly better for 2000-2001 V8 models (13/18 compared to 12/17). While not huge, it makes me curious what the changes were and it makes fuel consumption slightly more palatable.

Was it transmission/drivetrain changes, or engine changes?

the heads got better from somewhere in the 97 year they got upgraded to the "p" heads.. other than that not sure.
