Gonna change the fuel filter on my 99. Never did it on any of my explorers. I heard that a special tool is needed. PLease advise and let me knowif there is any easier way to do this job.

Yep a special tool is needed and you still might shoot out a few 4 letter words so just be persistant and you'll get it done,,,,the tool is sold at any parts store one end will fit inside the end of the fuel line just push the tool into the line and boom instant gas bath..

I believe it should be done @ 100k miles. You do need the fuel line tool to change it. The first thing you want to do thought is disable the fuel pump (pull the fuse), open your gas cap, then crank over the engine a few times. This will relieve the fuel pressure. You may also prefer to raise the front end, this will prevent shiphoning from the tank. You will still have some fuel spill out, but you won't get fire-hose drenched!!

Make sure you get the plastic disconnect tool, they are much easier for some reason. The metal ones don't work good at all.

I just pull the plug on the inertia switch under the glove box on the passenger side, the run it till it stops. change the filter, plug it back in and reset the switch if it popped. should be the same on the 99's.

P.S. Dont do it in your garage with the doors closed.......

Just changed mine on my 97 V8 XLT. You'll need the cheap plastic ring tool that they rap you ten bucks for and my 97 had a schrader valve on top center of the engine next to the intake manifold that I used to disperse fuel pressure. Still had some syphoning from the tank and took some in the puss but I guess it was better than being under pressure.
