Is that the EGR Flow? is this a major problem? Can I still drive it until I replace or clean the EGR?

would installed a K&N cause this code? seems like as soon as I installed the filter the check engine light came on about 2 days later.

Generally, it is the DPFE that goes bad, not the EGR. Also, check the vacuum lines from the DPFE to the EGR. Make sure they are not cracked/plugged.

THANK YOU!! I did a search online on the DPFE...I had no idea what that was when you posted it, in my findings you are 100% correct on the probability of this being the faulty part over the EGR itself. My question now is, where is the DPFE located in the car? I did not find this information online but I did get a photo of the part. It looks like the socket the code scanner plugs into or similar to it. I guess ford/mercury has had problems with many models of having bad DPFE sensors. Learn something new everyday.

Yeah I replaced about $300 worth of parts on my 1994 XL 4.0L OHV until I spent $40 on a dpfe and the check engine went away and has been gone since... take care

George

I'm not sure where on a 5.0. If you can find the EGR, then just follow the tubes. The DPFE should not be far away.

egr is by the firewall behind the intake...isn't the dpfe under or connected to the egr? if so I know where it is. I should have 30 min. tomorrow to replace it. This isn't a dealer part only is it?

Can somebody tell me which fuse to pull to disable the ABS light that is always on in my dash? I tried to pull the # 14 on the passenger compartment fuse panel and it didnt do anything...light still on, so I put it back in. I read on a post here a few days ago to pull a fuse, but could not find the post, nor do I think it specified which compartment to pull the fuse from.
thank you,
Brooke

JDub - DPFE is not dealer only. Just be careful when you pick it up from autostore cause not all of them are aware of exactly what it is...

Brooke, not sure why you asked that here, but there is no fuse. Use a piece of black tape and cover the light. Better yet, get your ABS fixed.

Just picked it up from the dealer...it was only $30. The two auto stores I went to didn't carry it :-( But for $30 I'm happy...

I was quoted $87 and 97 from the local Ford dealers. Went to NAPA and paid $52. Mine was for a 96 XLT. Are you sure you got the right item? Maybe cheaper on the newer ones. Good Deal!

No I'm not sure!! When I got home from work I went to put it in and can't find ANYTHING that looks like the part they gave me at the dealership. Thank god I didn't open it yet because they wont take it back if opened. What I need is someone to tell me excatly WHERE the DPFE is located on a 2000 5.0 Mountaineer. If its the part on the very back of the intake by the firewall then I know where it is...otherwise I'm at a loss. I can't even get it off to see the part number. Can anyone tell me the location of the DPFE? My manual only shows the location of it on a 6 cyl. :( :( :(

someone help this noob

I think I read somewhere on this forum that the DPFE for your is just where you said, in the back by the firewall. I was just looking at my manual for the 5.0L for 96 and it shows EGR valve sensor 9G483 bolted onto the EGR valve. This is from a schematic in the book, not a picture of the engine.

thanks for clarifying. Yes it is located at the rear of the intake by the firewall...I took it to the ford dealer by my house and asked them to just show me where it is. Punks wanted to charge me $ just to show me where the part is located. I got a little upset and said I already bought the part from them and that I just want a finger to point at where it goes. Finally someone with half a heart pointed right to where I thought it was. Only thing is,....the new DPFE sensor does not have the two holes for the two bolts that hold it on. These must not be required anymore. Also I'll have to remove the upper intake just to get the old DPFE sensor off, not to big of a deal.

Thanks everyone for the help! :D
