Just wondering if anyone has done this? or any muffler in general? im not looking to spend 500+ on a cat back system, i dont really care for extra power, i just want a nice sound out of my v8.

I suggest checking out the 2005-2010 Mustangs after market exhausts for the sound you want as they share the same V8 as 4th gen Explorers and Mountaineers. I have a Steeda axle back exhaust on my 2007 GT that sounds fantastic. Maybe you can just buy mufflers from Steeda and splice them into your 4th gen or go for another brand. If you want to know the sound you will have just listen to some Mustangs, find out what they are running and buy the brand/model of muffler you like. If you are not going for dual exhaust then you will only need one muffler but there is something about the sound of dual exhaust that makes the sound sweeter over single exhaust, IMO.

I have a Flowmaster Delta 44 muffler with the stock exhaust and no resonator. It's VERY loud. And the harmonics at 55-60 mph are annoying on a long trip. I'm probably going to change it soon to a Flowmaster 50 series SUV muffler, which should still give a throaty exhaust with less harmonics. The whole thing was under $200 installed, so you could go that route. But I would stay away from a cheap cherry bomb muffler. It won't last very long.

The packing in those Cherry Bombs burn out quickly and they get annoyingly loud, IMO.

I have a gibson side swept cat back on my explorer. I think I paid like $ 380 ish I would like to say? Anyway it sounds great and is not too loud. It is loud but not the road but really gives the deep throaty v8 sound. It does not really drone at highway speeds, but it will drone a little once you get the car pushing 80 or 85 but it did that before the exhaust too, just a by product of having the engine above 3500. I would recommend going this route. pretty cost effective and gives a good compromise in terms of sound.

Okay, thanks alot everyone, I'll consider my options more, probably won't go for a cherry bomb now though haha. Maybe I'll either save up a bit and go for the full cat-back, or just get a full custom exhaust with borla everything, with cats ofc

EDIT, there's two catback kits..one is about 520 bucks and is number 619692 from Jegs, the other one is 319692 and is about 375 bucks.

Not sure what the difference is, i think 619692 may have a larger muffler, as the shipping package is a bit bigger. That's the one I just ordered. Will update with pics once it arrives. :)

I'm gonna look into that for mine. Do you have a part number in case i can't locate it? Thanks! :)

The difference isn't the size of the muffler. The more expensive kit is stainless steel. The other one is aluminized steel. There are threads on here about installing the kit and clearance issues over the rear axle. You may have to trim one of the pipes.

Yeah install over the rear axle did suck. you do have to cut the stock exhaust to get it out, and it was a PITA to install the new one. It really did not want to go together at first but I didn't have to modify it. I got it installed but it did not really fit together perfect. after a week or so of driving I looked at it again and took it apart and put back together. after a little driving it had gotten hot and fit together much better. So my advice is dont freak if it is dosnt fit good the first time, once I drove the car it fit together much better and I have had no issues since. Watch out for clearance with the rear drive shaft and rubbing against the spare tire when installing.
