CLEAN YOUR MAF METER! Plus Info on MPG Gains

I agree, my mileage jumped when I cleaned mine. Plus, my idle was much smoother, and overall ran better.

OK its been a few weeks and I would say that I got a little less then a 1mpg gain and the throttle response is quicker and idle is smoother, especially when its cold out.

Done. Went to 4 stores before I found a T-20 security bit (Napa was out), and the epoxy crud on one screw was a PITA to chip out. It did make a difference though!

Good maintenance, that's the best mpg procedure, good thread.

FYI, the oiled air filters all will have a negative affect on the MAF, so don't use an oiled filter. There are a small number of high quality non oiled air filters, buy one of those. I like the Amsoil air filter because it cleans far better than a K&N, does not take oil, and lasts four years. It's high, but it's the best, vacuum it once per year. Regards,

Hey I got the Mac Intake. I've had it since Halloween. When Do I know it needs to be replaced. Also about cleaning the Mass Air Sensor, what product do I need to clean and is there a step by step proceedure on here on how to do it (Pics preferred) I'd like to save some money since I gotta get my Fuel filter replaced along with suspension problems fixed at the dealership next month.

I got some great results from this. I recently cleaned my MAF and Throttle body, and the improvments are great.
I make trips from delaware to pennsylvania a couple times a month. It used to be that I would use about a 1/4 tank to get to Pennsylvania, be down to half before I was ready to return to Delaware and have to stop and fill up when I got just into Delaware. Since cleaning both, I made it all the way home and had not hit 3/4. Also, I made it all the way back into Dover and when my tank hit 1/4 I had gone 210 miles. This is a huge improvement (I actually still havent filled up, and have been driving back and forth to work!)
Also, I should mention that when I was on about half a tank, I was sitting at a red light and when I looked over this guy in an Infiniti G35 decided to rev his engine at me. I let it go because I was out with my girl, but then he decided to full on drag racing launch his car off the line. So, I proceeded to put my pedal about half way down and blow him away. From 0-60 I left him about three car lengths back. So, I slowed back down to 50mph (speed limit) and about 15 seconds later he came flying past haha. This led to my girl saying "damn your truck can get it!"
So, even with some less than MPG saving driving during the current tank I have gotten much improved gas mileage from cleaning the MAF and Throttle body.

As someone else mentioned, using an oil less filter in your air intake setup like an Amsoil filter keeps your MAF nice and clean too. Nonetheless, this thread reminded me to clean my MAF too. It was pretty clean, but every little bit counts, right? :D

I haven't done mine yet, the Volant air filter didn't look oily. I like the Amsoil EA filter, I wish that there was more room in the air cleaner though. I'll fabricate something for my V8 some day.

So fabricate a Volant for the V8 (like me). :D

I'm thinking of a much larger air filter than the little 6x4x7 or what ever it is.

I finally got enough tricks to make the Volant stay put, and the inlet tube to not touch the alternator(zip ties). They should have developed it more, and provided the tips. BTW, I have it apart again, the water pump with 15k miles just died. I'm getting tired of new parts failing early. Regards,

I've never had any issues with the filter size. It seems more than adequate. I also find the Volant kit fits quite snugly and doesn't move around unlike others who complain about it.

I just scored an Amsoil prefilter to give it a go. Calgary is pretty dusty and the prefilter isn't restrictive at all. So far, so good. I figure it's easier to full the prefilter off and give it a shake rather than the vaccuum method (which isn't that hard of course).

That's a good idea. Some times I find a lot of debris in my air cleaners, and other times almost nothing. So far this 99 Explorer with the Volant has stayed very clean. Night,
