So it's summer and no one's started a BB thread yet so I guess it's up to me then :p

I know there's a lot going on with Steve's buildup, Jefe's BBQ and then Pismo.
Maybe even some of those NorCal and Arizona freaks will come out for some fun too :monkey:

Everybody seems keen on the idea of running Cleghorn and Dishpan springs but here's the deal, Cleghorn is good for maybe a half day run and Dishpan springs is probably the trail furthest out from Cleghorn or even where we normally head out in Fawnskin. If we plan on running John Bull or Holcomb creek as well then we need to come up with a game plan.

Suggestions for dates, campsites and trail running order welcomed :D

I'm pretty booked for August, so it'd have to be a weekend in Sept for me. Well, unless the Swamp-end of summer run doesn't happen, then the last weekend in August would work.

"ditto"

I can't do the hardest parts of these runs until I get sliders, but there are alternates for everything but Dishpan Springs and I live only a few miles from there... so :

in (assuming July 22/23 per CG's post below)
&
/subscribed

Geez, I'd hate to wait til September. Maybe have one in August for those who can, and another in Sept when the rest can.

I'd like a two day run, meet Sat morning at I-5 and Cleghorn, go up the mountain, do some other trail. Go to campground. Next day, do Dishpan/Deep Creek.

Even if it's just a couple rigs (Rangers ;) ), I'm game. We're overdue for a BB run. I'll go in Aug AND Sept! :D

Watching this thread, but you all know my story :(

How about this, we do Cleghorn as a day trip and a make a weekend of the trails up in Big Bear somewhere down the line?
I'm up for a run in Aug and Sept (or even now for that matter :D ) I was thinking doing Cleghorn and BB together in one weekend might be too much to cram in one weekend...just throwin' out options.

I'd love to make both the BB run and Swamp. How about Big Bear the last weekend of Aug. (since it's closer for the new SAS guys) & Swamp sometime in Sept???

Anybody doing the Rubicon late this year???

Some friends in the Rubicon Owners Club are running to Big Bear July 22 & 23. I'm going to try to make this one, let me know if anybody wants to go...

Here is their schedule:

Hey Rubi Owners, are you looking for some adventure, wanna see how well
that rig climbs.
A few of us did a bit of exploring for you. Some familiar trails and
some recently reopened after the devastating fires of the past few yrs.
2 days worth of wheeling, from the I15 fwy in the Cajon Pass to the 18
east of Big bear. One end of the mountain to the other, less than 2 mi
on pavement.
WHEN: 22-23July2006
WHERE: 22 July 0830,Cleghorn rd Exit, I15 (north of devore, just
before the 138 jct)As you exit we will be waiting on the right side of
the rd.(trailhead)
23 July0900 Hwy 18 and 3N14 in front of Fire Station, Fawnskin.
Required equipment:Front and rear tow attachment points,(NO trailer
balls)
Tow Strap
Fire extinguiser
First aid kit
CB radio(handheld will suffice)
Spare tire and tools to change same.
(these are minimum, bring what you think you may need for a 3+ rated
trail)
NOTE FOR STOCK Rubicons.
These trails are passable by stock Rubicons with experienced
drivers,BUT,body and or mechanical damage is very possible.I always
welcome stock rigs,(I've done these trails in a STOCK open diff CJ)and
also scratched and dinged my slightly built Rubi on them. Our prerun
had 2 rigs on 33s,they had ZERO probs,seldom locked.Bottom line,If you
don't like to risk scratches from brush or minor dings, dont like STEEP
climbs, off camber bench roads. Please wait till Sun.Though John Bull is
a "rock"trail, You drive one of the best OUT of the BOX rock crawlers
around,we go very slowly and have lead MANY stock rigs thru without
incident.

Trails: Sat 22 July.
Cleghorn Ridge trail (2N47)rated most difficult, very few rocks, but
DEEPLY rutted and STEEP,11/2mi pavement to Pilot Rock Fuel break
(2N17X)rated most difficult,steep,narrow ridge trai,some deep rutts(V
notches)connect to Pilot Rock Trail(2N33)lots of fun Most difficult
bypasses, steep rutted, ends with a nice easy cool down as we enter the
forest.<1mi pavement to Willow Creek JP trail(2N34),EASY drive
connecting us to Dishpabn Springs AKA Deep Creek trail(2N34)This is a
Most Difficult trail, climbing up to Crab Flats, moderate rocks, some off
camber on a bench road. This trail had been closed since 03.Much work
was done to reopen it 2 months ago.It is THE LINK from Arrowhead to
Big Bear area for 4x4s.At Crab Flats CG we will travel out to Green
valley Lake rd (paved) VIA FS rd 3N16.A full day of fun wheeling with
spectacular views from high on the ridgelines.
Sunday 23 July: White Mtn(3N17)The Northern most ridge trail on the
mtn.Rated Most difficult,But bypasses are available on the worst
sections,Loose, small rocks, steep climbs, spectacular views of the high
desert changing to forest as we climb.from here we connect to 3N16
Easy dirt rd,to The John Bull Trail (3N10) rated most difficult, the
premier trail in the SBNF,featuring many little "rock gardens"
reaching elevations of over 8000ft.From here we will call it a fun day
and sadly head back to the Flatlands below.
NOTE: All ratings are USFS.I personally would rate most of these
trails a 3 on a 1-5 scale John Bull is a solid 3+
It is summer so don't forget sunscreen and lots of water.
See you on the trail.Bud

Sounds pretty much what I had in mind for our run.

I was just looking at my road atlas and noticed that Cleghorn is closer to Dishpan springs trail than I thought...been so long since i've been up there
So anyways, maybe Cleghorn and Dishpan on Sat. then John Bull and/or Holcomb creek Sun. or...?

I am in. I have some upcoming weekends that are booked but I have to wheel soon. Cleghorn to 2N17X (maybe stop and jump in Silverwood lake to cool off) to Dishpan Springs, on up to Arrowhead and Big Bear would be awesome. Then camp up there where it is cool above 6000 ft. and break out the cold ones. My alcoholic brothers have been bugging me for another trip and they have been jonezing to put some more dents and broken mirrors on my ride and have an excuse to drink too much aside from "it's the weekend."

2N17X. That's the other trail I want to do after Cleghorn! I couldn't remember the name. It starts right near where Cleghorn ends.

Jobunn's plan, top to bottom, is perfect! :D

Does anyone think the recent fires going to be any kind of factor for us and this run?
Anything is possible a week away, but I don't think so unless winds change dramatically. The fires haven't been burning towards the mountain yet and have thus far had no physical impact I've seen from this side of the mountain.

Latest reports are that there is no threat to the Big Bear area
There's a huge mushroom cloud visible in my neck of the woods, looks like an atom bomb went off.

Looks like some people are ready to wheel sooner than later so what do you guys say we have a run for the last weekend in July (29th & 30th) and then have another run in Aug or Sept when everyone else is ready?

I can probably be here for all of them :thumbsup:

John and I would not be able to make that.
