Cleghorn/Big Bear Run

Too bad no one could make it out for this run, the weather was perfect up there probably around mid to upper 70's. We ran Cleghorn and 2N17X on Sat. and Holcolmb creek trail today (Sun). Pretty much had the trails to ourselves, ran across maybe a handfull of jeeps while we were out there. I broke a tailight while trying to back out of a nasty section of Cleghorn and then on 2N17X, the bolt on the drivers side tie rod came out while playing on a rock outcropping  Turns out I lost the castle nut (no cotter pin  ) somewhere between Cleghorn and the rock outcropping. I didn't have a spare
3/4" nut but I had a spare 5/8" nut and bolt I could use until I could get into Big Bear city. It actually worked pretty good and didn't tear up the hole with the smaller bolt. On my way into town I pulled into a body shop where they were still working and noticed they had some race cars around so I figured if anyone would have a 3/4" nut, they would. As luck would have it he had ONE in a bucket of old nuts and bolts that he dumped out on the floor. I offered him some money but he said don't worry about it so I thanked him and my weekend was able to continue :D
I'd like to get up there again soon after I deal with a few minor issues with my truck.
Sorry no pics, hard to take any when it's just 2 rigs in the group and your always moving.

Sounds like fun Dave. That's the exact route I'd like to do. What kind of condition was Cleghorn and 2N17X in? Did you get a look at Dishpan Springs at all?

Cleghorn and 2N17X both seem to be in good condition...no big washouts or anything.

Cleghorn has one spot where it's real tight and off camber, that's where I broke my tailight and had to back out. A front locker would've helped in that situation...or perhaps gotten me into deeper trouble :p

2N17X also had a couple spots of interest, there's one hillclimb that has 3 lines and a bypass you can take. All 3 lines have a nasty rock ledge you have to climb at the crest of the hill. My buddy in his stock jeep attemted the far right line and got in trouble when he hit some loose gravel and slid sideways on the hill. I came up the bypass which cuts across all 3 lines and strapped him to my truck and was able to get him out of his situation.
The other spot was a tight off camber part of the trail similar to the Cleghorn
spot I desribed above which almost put me on my side, I actually don't know why I wasn't but my buddy Tim said my tire was keeping from going over  Not like I had far to go though, the walls were only inches away from my truck. I was able to back out of that one too and took a different approach with better results.

Never made it to Dishpan Springs...after my tie rod mishap on 2N17X we decided to go into to Big Bear and get situated for the night. Sunday we only ran Holcolmb and called it a weekend.

FYI: There's free air with a good compressor at the car wash in Arrowbear  (across the road from Valero gas station)

I need time to deal with some issues on my truck. Hopefully things will be in order by the end of the month

That's cool, Dave. By then, there should be enough people with junk that runs, to put a run together. :D

How about Labor Day weekend? I think I am getting it off this time around (first weekend of September). I should be able to go up Friday afternoon, returning on Monday afternoon if anyone else is interested.

Yes he would.
I don't know where we are going to camp though, because it will be crowded that weekend and now we have the RV so I can't just camp off in the forest because the dam thing is too friggin big. I could get up to Big Pine Flat, but there are only 19 spaces and its first come first served.
