Clicking When first started

Wassup Guys-

I have a 98 Explorer EB and from a cold start, I hear this clicking sound near the engine and it sounds like its coming from near the drivers side. The car starts normally, the clicking begins after the engine has started. It goes away after about 15-30 secs after the engine is running and doesnt come back until I shut the car off and restart. Any ideas?

Hmmmmm, sounds like a dead battery to me, but what I don't get is that you can eventually start your car, right? I had that very same problem last night, my problem: almost dead battery!!

Regards,

Peter

I should have clarified it, the car starts normally, the clicking starts after the engine is running.

What kind of clicking- tapping, or cracking? How frequent- 5 taps per second, etc. Is is noticeable outside of the vehicle or under the hood more or less than inside behind the wheel? Does it change with engine speed (I know you said it goes away fast, but goose it before it does and see).

Hi Guys--

Thanks for all youre response, but I now know that its the infamous 00M12 cam tensioner problem and have scheduled it for service tomorrow. Thanks for all youre help!

I wonder if Ford will extend that recall to me. I have the same problem with my V8. The clicking lasts for a minute or so until the truck warms up, and I haven't noticed it until this winter.

mine's an OHV, but also clicks

After starting my Explorer, I will hear LOUD clicks. They come about 1 every 10-25 seconds for the first 5 or so minutes after cranking the engine. It sounds like a thick piece of plastic being cracked in half.

crank engine, idling........CLICK, idling.........CLICK, idling...........CLICK, and so on

Any ideas?

yours sounds like the A/C compressor, which would be normal. Is the A/C on when this happens?

RytM1, the recall won't apply to you. No cam tensioners in the old 5.0 What type of oil filter do you use? Frams have a tendency to cause ticking/clicking on startup due to a poorly designed check valve that allows oil to flow back into the filter from the top of the engine.

Yob, I agree with Sideswipe. If your environmental controls are on any postion other than Panel or Floor, your compressor will run. Just had to remind my wife of that today when she complained about our OHV clicking/clunking while idling.

Also, FYI, the last several years of 4.0 OHV's also make a diesel/rattling noise at idle too. Marbles in a tin can is the most common description for that noise.

The climate control is in the OFF position. It's also on full heat.
It's not the A/C compressor. I thought that at first too. It's not a click like something turning on. It's LOUD. I tried to find where it was coming from today but couldn't even tell what area the noise was coming from.

i know this is an apples to oranges comparison, but my 66 mustang does this at startup for about 20-30 seconds. it is the lifters tapping as the car warms up before the oil goes through the engine and gets to them. the tapping does last a longer period of time when it is cold out. perhaps this is the problem.

It's not the lifters either. Believe it or not my lifters do not tick at all with 89,000+ miles. This sound is way too loud to be lifters and sounds like plastice breaking in two.
