Howdy. I'm looking for a little advise regarding camshaft selection. I know there's a load of information out there, but my question is fairly specific.

1999 XLT 5.0L going into a 1998 Ranger S/C (RWD) for street use. I want a jackrabbit off the line. High RPMs are not critical. Mild to moderate idle preferred. Minor bolt-ons...CAI, TMH, 1-inch spacer, performance tune. Otherwise stock...transmission, converter, heads, intake, gears, etc. Installed an E303 but now having reservations. Assume custom is not a great option for me.

COMP recommends 35-512-8
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 206 int./212 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees): 114
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.480 int./0.480 exh. lift
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 206 int./212 exh.

But I think I want something a little more aggressive, since I've already upgraded springs, rockers and pushrods. These are the other ones I've looked at.

COMP 35-510-8
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 208 int./216 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees): 112
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.533 int./0.544 exh.
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 208 int./216 exh.

COMP 35-514-8
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 216 int./224 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees): 112
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.544 int./0.555 exh.
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 216 int./224 exh.

Any recommendations?

Much obliged.

Volver,

That's the COMP 35-51-8. One of the other cams I was looking at. I like the RPM range, but the big lift and smaller lobe separation made me wonder about that choice. I'm no expert, but I don't think piston clearance will be an issue if you stick with the 1.6 rockers. I read somewhere though that you're not getting much benefit higher than .500 lift and that you're just abusing your springs above that...but that may have been with the GT-40 heads.

Good luck.

thanks didn't know that more than .5 lift was pointless.
