Hi;

I've got a '91 XLT and blew a head gasket. Since I'm tearing the top-end end down to have the heads remanufactured, and don't intend to replace the leaking and non-functional a/c compressor (will use a by-pass pulley), what do I need to know/do to completely gut the a/c system?

Can I simply cap off all of the exposed inlets/outlets and what, if any problems might I encounter by pulling the a/c system out?

I've already pulled the accumulator, compressor and refrigerant hoses, but would appreciate any information going forward.

( I live in the mountains and haven't had the need for a/c in the past ten years; it's still R12 and don't want to spend the time/money to change out the bad compressor and change to R134 )

Thanks, and I look forward to any feedback!!!

Since I feel nice today, Instead of deleting this I will move it to the HVAC forum

Geesh how nice of you John LOL

Your 91 Explorer was available from the factory without AC
The 4.0L engine is easy, just unbolt the compressor and run the non AC belt

If you want to do a complete removal of the AC system you will want to get the heater box assembly from a non AC truck, it is MUCH smaller
After that its just removing the hoses and the condensor in front of the radiator.
You could go as far as getting rid of the AC controls inside the cab as well, but IMO its not necessary.... in fact on my 88 BII I plan to use the AC button to turn on and off my on board air
