I have a 1996 Explorer XLT, I have recently realized that the 4 wheel drive is not working. I put the vehicle in the air and ran it in 4wd and 4low, Nothing but the back 2, The front drive shaft was turning both times. Then I tried it in 2wd and the front drive shaft was still turning. Well, then I lowered it back on the ground and tried it on a steep grassy incline. I only had one rear wheel spinning in 2wd, 4wd, 4low, all in forward and reverse. Anyone know what the problem is? is there a vaccum or electical line disconnected? Please Help. Thank You, Jeff p.s. I do hear it engaging in and out of 4wd with that clinging sound.

The front driveshaft will always be spinning if all 4 wheels are in the air because there is drag within the transfer case even in 2wd mode.

In your situation, there is something wrong with the vacuum disconnected front axle. With the axles disconnected, the ring gear and entire carrier assembly basically "walks" around the connected axle shaft, wasting all of the torque onto the disconnected axle shaft.

BTW Ive moved the thread to Transmissions and Transfer Cases, the Technician's Tips and Tech is not for posting questions.

Thanks

Hey thanks, I will check it out tommorrow in the day light to see if I can find the missing vaccum line. Do you know where exactly the line should be connected on both ends? (where on the differential, and where on the engine?) Thank, Jeff

I have no idea since I've never worked on the 95-96 Explorer (which were the only ones that came with the axle disconnect). But search around, I've seen a few threads about this.
