Cool Collar Installation

I came across the Cool Collar and thought it might be useful in lowering tranny temp.

I ordered it from J C Whitney ( http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/StoreCatalogDisplay/c-10101/s-10101 ). It cost $19.95.

The Cool Collar is a very well made ( looks like it came off the Space Shuttle ), heavy duty collar that goes over an oil filter or in this case the K & N oil filter that serves as my external tranny filter ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34136&highlight=transmission+filter ). The collar does not fit completely around the oil filter; it must have been designed for a smaller diameter filter. It should still serve well as a heat sink.

Installation was straightforward; simply loosen the clamp on the collar, slip it over the oil filter and tighten. That’s all there is to install

A road test was postpones due to nasty cold rain; will try to perform the evaluation tomorrow.

The Cool Collar was removed from the oil filter for a baseline temperature reading.

All temperature measurements were determined by a Dakota Digital ( http://dakotadigital.com/ ) transmission temperature gauge. The truck’s electric fan was set on automatic.

The first part of the test was to simply let the truck idle for 30 minutes, with and without the Cool Collar to monitor the ATF temperature. The ambient temperature was 56 F. This part of the test was conducted between 6 and 7 AM.

Next a road test to monitor tranny temperature was conducted. I made a 25 mile run on I 75 at 75 MPH, ambient temperature was 59 F. The first run was made without the Cool Collar to establish a baseline. The Cool Collar was installed and the same run conducted.

The results of this preliminary trial are as follows:

Baseline temperature at idle 145 F
Cool Collar temperature at idle 132 F
Baseline temperature at highway speed 134 F
Cool Collar temperature at highway speed 129 F

Based on this initial trail, the Cool Collar appears to be a practical product. While idling, the Cool Collar reduced the transmission temperature 13 F, and at highway speed it reduced the temperature 5 F. The lower temperature reduction at highway speed could be attributed to the fact that this truck has the factory tow package transmission cooler as well as a supplemental cooler that are more efficient at speed than sitting still.

Remember, your transmission’s worst enemy is heat; is it worth $20.00 to you to reduce your transmission temperature 5 F ( and even more when sitting stil ); it definitely is to me.

Test Results Laboratory Test
Castrol GTX 10W30 motor oil was heated to a temperature of 220 degrees F. and pumped simultaneously through two identical oil filters. One oil filter had a Cool Collar attached, the other did not. A fan was used to direct seventy degree F. ambient air over both oil filters at a velocity of fifty miles per hour. The oil exiting the filter having the Cool Collar installed indicated a Aheat removal approximately equal to two degrees per minute. Whereas the oil temperature exiting the filter without the Cool Collar showed no change. (Typically an automotive engine passes all the oil through the filter more than once per minute).
Summary: With a constant heat source applied to the oil, the temperature dropped to 202 degrees F (from 220 degrees F.) with five minutes. This translates to a 12% temperature decrease of the heat added to ambient temperature.
Liquid Cooled Automotive Engine (Road Test)
This test was an actual highway test. The car used was a late model Corvette equipped with digital readout oil temperature and coolant temperature gauges. On a 72 degree F. day, at 65 miles per hour, the oil temperature read a constant 221 degrees F. The water temperature was 195 degrees. The corvette was then pulled off the road and a Cool Collar was installed. Testing was then resumed. Within a distance of five miles the Cool Collar was responsible for lowering and maintaining the oil temperature at 203 degrees F.
Summary: Our tests again indicated a 12% approximate reduction above ambient temperature of oil heat. On similar testes, it was found that after installation of the Cool Collar the oil temperature will typically drop near to the level of the engine coolant temperature.
Air Cooled Engine (Road Test)
The test vehicle used was a 1978, 911SC Porsche, equipped with a carrera style oil cooler. The car was driven 65 MPH on a 85 degree day for approximately 35 miles. The car was then stopped and a I.R. thermometer was used to check the temperatures at various points along the oil lines, tank and cooler. In addition, the reading on the dash temperature gauge was noted. An average temperature of 220 degrees was logged.
Testing was then resumed, with the Cool Collar installed on the oil filter, over the same coarse and speed. At the end of the 35 miles the temperatures were then checked again using the infra-red thermometer at the same points as before. The indicated temperature readings showed an average reading of 208 degrees, a reduction of 12 degrees.


The above tests were based on oil temperature whereas this study was with ATF.

Further, I will be testing the effect of the Cool Collar on engine oil temperature after I complete the Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass oil filter system ( http://www.amsoil.com/bypassfilters/instructions/bmk13.htm

You know, I've seen those things in JC WHITNEY for years, and always thought that the principle at least, was sound. I wonder how much improvement you'd get if the tranny filter was in a 'less sheltered' area on the truck ie; in front of the radiator? Any little bit of heat reduction is worth it! We are willing to pay $40-50 or more to gain 1 hp! Guess I got 1 more goody to buy now. Al, keep us posted with your results!

I wanted one of those but my filter is behind my grill and it would not fit. Looks like yours is kinda just sticking out the bottom, you are not afraid of putting a hole in it?
 






Do you think it would be worth buying to dissipate oil filter heat? Since my filter is in the stock location I'm not sure it would be a help..

A 5 degree reduction in temp is B.S, but if you have a need, buy the thing :D

I was going to test a Cool Collar with my stock oil filter, however, since I am converting to Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass filter system, I did not perform that test.

If I were you, I would try it.

The filter ( with changes ) has been in use for over three years and I have never had a problem.

I've seen them mounted closer to the front, like behind the bumper on the frame. Seemed like a pretty good spot.
