Cool Collar Installation

So I was wondering something, if you were to use this on an OHV with the oil filter next to the exhaust, would it have a reverse affect? Take the heat from the exhaust and put it into the oil filter?
That was my question two weeks ago, yes it will aborb heat, thats what heat sinks do

Touchdown ! Thanks for all the help guys.

Cool collars? oil re-location kits? for 5 degrees reduction if it exsists, is a bunch of bunk, save your money,JMO

I'm not entirely crazy about having the oil filter right next to my exhaust, as for the cool collar, $20 isn't bad for one but I'll wait to see more results.

Am certain more studys will be forthcoming on this very high tech device :D

I would say you V6 guys would benifit from relocating the filter. I may do that so mine doesn't run all over the sway bar/PS lines when I remove it.

Getting oil on the sway bars?

Yes, it drains down over the front one.

Now that the remote ATF filter with the Cool Collar has been relocated to the area in front of the radiator, a new evaluation of its effectiveness was preformed.

This investigation consisted of two parts (1) a 100 mile highway speed ( ~ 70 MPH ) run on I75 without the Cool Collar installed and (2) reciprocal trip with the Cool Collar on the filter. The reason for the 100 miles is that I was visiting a friend in Naples, FL anyway.

The results of this non-statically valid observation are as follows:

Ambient temperature 78 F
Average ATF temperature w/o Cool Collar 133 F
Average ATF temperature with Cool Collar 126 F

I feel that the decline in temperature of 7 F definitely validates the usefulness of the device. I am curious to see what its effect will be when I tow the Jeep this spring since these conditions are the roughest on the ATF ( temperature wise ).

Please note that when the Cool Collar was installed, I used the Heat Sink Grease that Ray recommended. I would have liked to test both with and without the grease but time constraints prohibited that evaluation. The Cool Collar fins are definitely very hot to the touch indicating good heat exchange.

Any decrease in operating temperature of the ATF will definitely prolong its useful life as well as that of the transmission. The synergistic effect of the factory cooler, the B & M cooler and the Cool Collar offers me the best in ATF cooling.

Is the Cool Collar worth it? $20 is cheap insurance ….

So true, but that is of no concern of mine; I do this for me and share data with others.

I suspect the best results will come from a user's locating the collared filter in an airstream. Heat has to have someplace to go in order to transfer.
