I am having an issue with a coolant leak on my 1996 explorer v6 4.0 that seems to be coming from behind the thermostat housing. It is not leaking out of where the metal hose thing bolts into the rest of the housing, when I squeeze my radiator hoses I can see coolant coming from a small crevice there. Do I need to replace the head gasket? I don't have milky oil or white smoke from the exhaust. Just when I fill the radiator it all leaks out.

I found a known issue for your vehicle.

Ford found that the plastic intake manifold could crack leading to a coolant leak.

No recall was issued but Ford made a reinforced manifold and extended certain warranties depending on date of purchase.

Without pictures I'm just guessing really.

I'm getting 2 different part numbers for thermostat housings but I bet swsHawaii is right.

I don't have alot of exeperiance with your motor.
