I have a 1999 Ford Explorer v6 that cranks but wil not start. it will start with a shot of starting fluid but immediately die, I changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump does come on. I have not checked spark but I am thinking that it must have spark if it starts with ether or am I wrong. my knowledge of working on cars is limited but I can hold my own if I just have a little guidance. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Find the Fuel Pump Relay in your underhood power distribution box. Swap it out with a relay for a different circuit to see if that will work.

i judt did that still nothing

i saw something somewhere that said i should get rpms when cranking it over, if that's true i don't

Check the inertia switch to make sure it hasn't tripped and that the connection is good.

Check your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge at the rail. IDK if the '99 had a return or return-less style fuel system. Return type should be around 35-40 PSI at the rail. Return-less type should be around 65-70 PSI at the rail. My guess is that your fuel pump isn't doing its job. As it will start on staring fluid you have spark.

Change your fuel pump.

i checked the inertia and thats not it. someone told me i can i use a tire pump to check pressure at at the rail. its the same type of fitting but is it true.

a car tire pump that plugs into cig lighter is the kind im talking about. It tells the pressure when i screw it on to my valve stem.

It might work once (I think you mean a tire pressure gauge) but then it will be ruined. I'm 99.9% sure your problem is your fuel pump.

I'm with Koda in that the fuel pump is at fault. There's a neoprene hose that attaches to the in-tank pump that
tends to split and return the fuel and pressure back into the tank. That could be the problem since the pump does
run. Regardless, I'd replace both the pump and hose.

thank you for your i help I really appreciate it. is the hose you are talking about not included when u get a pump

I always get Bosch fuel pumps off eBay. The ones I buy include the hose, clamps, new insulator and a jumper wire (which is almost always needed as the OE pumps used thin electrical terminals and the replacements have wide terminals). They also include a bunch of stuff you will not need. You will also need to buy a new sock strainer and fuel filter for the warranty.

Here is a link to an example, check the fitment for your specific vehicle. You can also call the Bosch Tech Support 800 number if you have any question as to which pump is right for your vehicle. The toll-free number, 1-855-BoschTech (1-855-267-2483).

I scanned through the past comments.
Is it getting fuel. I saw where you said it was getting spark.

My explorer just did the same thing. But when j sprayed starting fluid it would continue to run but when I tried to crank it back it wouldn't start.

I found out it was the throttle position sensor.

Maybe this will help someone who comes across this thread. I chased a crank but no start problem for about a year that would happen randomly. It turns out the crankshaft position sensor corrodes at the connector and this causes the truck to crank but not start. I just wiggled it and the truck started right up. If the corrosion is really bad you have to pull the sensor and clean the connector with electrical cleaner spray. Mine is a Florida truck so the corrosion wasn't that bad :D Hope this helps someone.
