hey all, was changing my oil on my explorer and happened to notice a nice gash in my cv boot on my front passenger side. Looks to me like grease and whatever else was inside ended up cover the whole inside of the wheel well. It might have happened when my brother owned the vehicle because it looks like its been like that for awhile. Trying to get it fixed before winter sets in. Now i was reading through the Haynes manual and they are saying pull the whole front shaft out just to replace the outer boot is this correct?

Yes-you will replace the whole axle shaft-if the seal is bad it is wise to replace the cv joint. The joint is part of the assmbly. You should be able to find a new shaft for 80 bux or so-

Replacing the outer boot is useless. Even if the joint hasn't been compromised, to replace the boot, you must disassemble the inner joint, then disassemble the outer joint, then swap the boot. For the amount of time and effort it takes to do that, you can buy a $60 halfshaft from AutoZone or Advance Auto with a lifetime guarantee, and it's a lot less work.

I have never seen a satisfactory, and reliable boot replacement.

I agree with all off these posts ...... replacing just a boot is useless........do the whole axle....its the same amout of labor

yeah like you all said. my safe bet is just to replace the whole thing. I mind as well do the other side too while im at it, who knows what kind of shape that side is in.
