so my a4ld is shot, overheats fast and when its hot wont move forward unless its in 4low but reverses fine. clutchs burnt out?

so now im wondering what to do, should i get a new explorer because i can get decent ones for around 1200$ or should i replace the tranny? im no mechanic but i did install the suspension and body lift in my x and i've done the brakes, replaced rear axle and changed the stearing pump and gear box so i think i could handle the transmision but i dunno.

and where would i get a tranny? new would be to expensive i bet and since the tranny is a common issue im thinking alot of x's in junk yards are there because the tranny died.

A new tranny is expensive. I've got a '92 4x4 with a shot transmission that I'm going to rebuild thanks to the two great threads here:

I bought a used tranny that ended up not working. Which is why I'm going to do a rebuild on the original that came out. I'm not a mechanic but these two threads give me the confidence to do it. I should be starting my project in the next couple weeks. I'm going to follow the path of the first one and if that works out I may try the modifications in the second thread.
Even if you decide rebuilding isn't for you they are full of good to know information.

Hope this helps some.

The A4LD is pretty weak and is a known issue.

It's part of owning an Explorer, you just have to suck it up and spend money on it, then you have a transmission that hopefully works great for the next hundred thousand miles.

A used Explorer is still going to have the same trans issue eventually, unless you get one with a manual, but they have their own issues.

Part of owning a vehicle is the maintanance and upgrade costs, either that or just keep switching to another vehicle everytime something pops up.

I'd say the way to do it is get a used or rebuilt trans to throw in, then try rebuilding the original if you want.
