Evidently my 94 Explorer's tranny pump died causing major damage to the transmission, modulator, etc. The repair shop wants 2400 bucks to replace the pump, tranny, modulator, etc with 2yr warranty. Does this seem too high or good to go?

$2400 for a full rebuild with upgrades and new torque converter including r&r costs isn't too bad (not good, but not bad)..

a4ld rebuilds have run us $1800 and $2400. The next time the trans went we switched to teh 700r4 (still not cheap to do, just didn't want the a4ld again).

mine cost $1800 and came with a 10,000 mile warranty, however that was a "retailer" price since I work at a shop.

Hate to hijack thread but maniak, how does the ex drive with the 700r4? And how much of a beach was the adapater?

Replace it. I would suggest getting it done at the dealer with a motorcraft with included warranty. It is worth the extra money to know you have a legit warranty and the unit will work. I went the cheaper route the first time around and got screwed by a rebuild shop. Spend a little extra the first time, it is cheaper than buying two crappy rebuilds. I would rater pay $2400 than have monthly payments for 3-5 years.
And dont use Phoenix Retrans, aka Phoenix Hard Parts. They sell alot of units on e-bay.

I would take that 2500 dollars and buy something else. This is a 94 we are talking about here. If you do throw the money at it, buy something real nice, with a good warranty. Then all you have to worry about is resale value, and the whole rest of the truck

Move to PEI Canada. Last year I priced getting my trany rebuilt at a local trany shop would have cost me $1200. I ended up getting one from a local truck scrap yard with under 150,000km for $300 and got it installed for $250.

Good luck

Daniel

when I bought my 94, I had t have the transmission rebuilt shortly after it. It cost $2000 for everything. It came with a fairly long warranty too. Then like 8,000 miles after that, my engine needed rebuilt. That was going to cost way too much so my 94 is just sitting in the driveway. I bought the 92 with a new engine a couple weeks go for a lot cheaper than it would had cost to fix the other one. I'm probably going to just part it out soon.

So it just really depends. If I had the money, I would had rebuild the engine in my 94 as I loved it and already spent the $2k on the tranny. Hopefully nothing will happen with this 92 anytime soon and by the time it does, I hope to have money to keep it going.

It has it quirks, but I like it.. Took me a while to get the trans coolers and trans cooler fans the way I like it (one more tweak to go).. The 3:1 1st gear is nice, but the torque converter still stall higher than I want.. to get it down to 2100rpms or so I have to have a custom converter built ($500ish).. as it is now, I flash stall at 2700-2900 rpms.. That means I'm 3000 rpms or so all the time in town, unless I'm 45mph+.

The adapter wasn't that bad, but it if you don't know the kit, working on the trans (i.e. pulling it) is different.. just more/different bolts to pull.. The adapter does get in the way of easily pulling the exhaust pipe off the manifold.

Would I do it again... problalby.. If I didn't do it I would have put in a manual trans with an atlas and a thumb throttle.

The 3:1 1st gear and high stall converter make it pretty easy to wheel with in the rocks.. lots of torque in low range.

PM me if you have any specific question on it...

Here in alaska the replacement at the dealer is about $3500, but it comes with a 3 year 100,000 mile war, found one on craigs list i got to test drive it before he removed it which was much better than the junkyards that didn't even know if the trani was good or not.
Ps make sure they know to flush the cooler lines or you will have a load of fun like i did.
