- 2002 Explorer XLT
I recently had some repairs done to the front end of my 2002 Explorer XLT 4.0 V6 4WD after a collision with a deer.
The mechanics had to remove the battery in order to fix the damage to the front end.
When I went to pick up my truck, I noticed that the unlock button on the key fob did not unlock the doors, so I figured they were already unlocked. The lock button, panic alarm button, and rear leftgate open button also did not work.
When I got in and started it up, I noticed the clock and radio had reset - different time and the radio display was set to 530 AM band.
I tried the door lock buttons on the door panels and they did not lock or unlock the doors.
I stopped, cut the engine, pulled the key, and got out. The interior dome lights and down lights on the exterior mirrors came on, but the clock and radio did not shut off when I pulled the key and opened the door. The power also remained on to the power windows even though the ignition was turned off and the key was pulled out.
So...
I checked the fuse box (#17) for the delayed accessory fuse and it was intact. The other guys at the garage also checked all the fuses and relays in the power distribution box under the hood. We could not figure out why the power was staying on to the windows, radio and clock.
I did check the manual and found another relay, the delayed accessory relay, on the reverse side of the fuse box, but was unable to check that.
I left it at the garage all day on Saturday and they worked over it with diagnostic equipment for 6.5 hours and checked all the wiring harnesses for breaks or shorts.
Am I on the right track thinking that one or more of the following may need to be done?
1) When a battery is installed, isn't there a reset that needs to be done on the vehicle's computer somewhere? I seem to recall having this same problem the last time I installed a battery myself, and took it to my garage where they fixed the problem.
2) The delayed accessory relay may have gone bad and needs to be replaced?
OR is there something else neither I nor the mechanics wer able to think of?
My truck is now at the Ford dealership and they probably won't be looking at it until tomorrow, so any info you guys may have will be gretly helpful for me to tell them.
Anyone have this problem before??
Thanks in advance.
