My Explorer had a problem for a while where sometimes the engine turn over was delayed by up to 2 seconds. Battery voltage was good, lights were only dimming a normal amount when starting, there seemed to be no reason why.
The solenoid on the fender was thumping every time the key was turned to start and when the starter spun it was at it's normal speed. I just never knew if it was going to be THE time it didn't start.
I decided to replace the Solenoid first as it COULD be causing the problem and it was the original part. As luck would have it, so far it is starting right up.
I hate replacing parts without knowing for sure what is bad but this one wasn't bad enough to easily test by myself. Electrical gremlins are the hardest to find.
Hope the helps someone, or at least amuses the rest of you.
