Did I pay too much for this explorer?

Sounds about right. I think 24 might be streaching it and asking for more than your going to get but I could see a possible 21-22 maybe... that is if god is on my side and I am not carrying anything at all with a quarter tank of fuel and my tires at 50psi lol. Of course I also must realize I lost fuel economy by switching to an all terrain tire. Road tires get waaaaaaaaaaaaay better mpg no matter what. It must be a tire law. lol.

Alright so I went on a trip for work and I racked up about 330 miles and about 310 of those miles were highway and about only 20 were city. I filled up my truck with the low octane gas (they take the low octane stuff right?) and got on the freeway right away.

I watched the fuel economy gauge the entire time and with an average speed of 74 mph I had a fuel economy of 19.7 mpg when I reached my destination.

I reset the fuel economy gauge and my final mpg total was 22.1 mpg for the return trip. It was at 23.0 for almost the entire return trip but on the last bit it got a little hilly. My average speed was around 70 mph but the main reason for the increase in mpg is that there is an ever so slight incline and decline going up and down California. I never noticed it until I watched my mpg calculator like a hawk. Even the tiniest inclines or declines affect mpg quite a bit.

My total average for the trip was 21.54 mpg. That was calculated by hand, I filled up my gas tank and divided the miles by the gallons I used.

My goal is still 24 mpg though haha. Going to try to inflate the tires, change the fuel filter, change the plugs, and see if I can reach it then. And a new louder exhaust system too, purely for the purpose of increasing mpg of course :D

Hopefully the next person who goes to buy one sees this thread and doesn't think it gets 18mpg city like I did lmao.

wax the car prior to the trip, so it will be slippery through the air. :P

Ford Explorer9 props to you sir!! Good job

waskly I wax once a month in hopes that it gives me even a thousandth of a mpg better haha:D

yes, that's a good deal. I just purchased an 07 EB 4x4 V8 for $14,000 150,000KM on it. Its fully loaded with a DVD etc. It was considerably cheaper than other explorers in my neck of the woods, so I drove 1,200 KM round trip to bring it home. Other V8 4x4 explorers with less options were going for $16,000.

Thanks Essex :)

Although you are probably kidding Waskly I didn't know that was actually something people do to improve gas mileage until I googled it haha.

Thanks :D

And $14,000 is a sweet deal for a V8 4x4 with only 90k miles! :D

No problem. I actually don't wax my explorer for fuel economy gains but hey wax never hurts your mpg so why not make it glisten and glow.
:D
