Hi peoples,

My brother has asked me if I would give his 2005 Ford F350 an oil change.

It has a 6.0L Turbo Diesel Engine, and just over 200,000 km or 120,000 miles. He purchased it in near perfect condition with all scheduled maintanence performed up to date. He also had it inspected be the dealership with very good results.

My question is as follows:

After this kind of mileage, can I use synthetic? I know in gasoline engines, this would normally result in oil leaks. Does the same hold true in Diesels?

Also, can anyone recommend a good diesel oil to use in this thing?

Thanks

Synthetic will not cause oil leaks in a diesel or in a gasoline engine. Visit bobistheoilguy.com and you can learn more about that and many other oil myths.

Rotella 15w40's additive package is very good, and being a conventional oil, it is a good low price oil, Amsoil makes a wonderful synthetic 5w40 formulated for diesels if you would like a synthetic. However, everything else is pretty good too, as long as you stay away from the bargain brands. That engine uses 15 quarts of oil as well, so be aware that it isn't going to be 5 quarts like you are used to with most gas engines.

When changing the oil, pre-fill the oil filter so that you get oil pressure quicker, this keeps the turbocharger's bearings lubricated.
