Can any of the tranny gurus here tell me the differences between the 60 and 80 ? Is it just the torque converter rating or the internals are also beefier ?

And the main question, if my tranny goes south in my 06, and I have 6R60, can I use 6R80 from a 08-10 model year ( or from F150 or Expedition)?

Thanks

Well, like you said the 6R80 is sold in the Explorer V8 models from 2009-10 and my basic understanding is that the 6R transmissions are all the same family with the same gearing but the 60, 80, etc. is what determines the torque capacity so the 80 would have a different torque converter and stronger internals (rated for somewhere around 400 ft-lbs. of torque).

If you went that way it sounds like you may or may not have to reprogram the TCM to be able to communicate with it, but you should be able to just buy a kit to rebuild the 60 to the 80 specs.
There are also products out there now that take care of the issues of the early 6R60/80transmission.
