I think that depends on the helmet design, like a full-face, half/open-face.The average person has a 200+ degree peripheral field of vision, a helmet restricts that to 140-150 degrees.
I dont do any motorcycle riding but I've worn a few helmets in my life (biking, snowboarding) and I would rather snowboard with a helmet than not, its almost scary not to especially here in the east coast where its almost always ice -- and sometimes that tree doesn't always move out of the way. I once caught the edge of the board and slammed the back of my head on ice and wowzers, that was a spicey experience, ruined the rest of my day. I'm thinking motorcycle riding is probably the same? Yeah it gets in the way sometimes but it could very well help you from having a very sour day.
