Good Day to you All.

My daughter was pulling the door handle (inside) while I hit the remote to unlock the door (drivers side rear) and now the door wion't open/unlock from the outside or the inside.
I managed to pop the door panel off from the inside and have limited access into the door itself.
Does anyone have, or know where to see, exploded drawings of the locking/latch mechanism so that I can at least open the door ?

Thanks

I think you'll find that the problem is not with the latch, the problem is with the door handle. If you search the forum, you'll find that it is a very common problem.

You'll have to replace the interior door handle. It isn't a big job, nor is it expensive. Just a PITA.

the thing about these explorers that people that dont own them (the ones that usually ride in the back seat) dont realize is that when you pull the handle it dosnt "click" and the door pops open, you have to pull the handle and then push, they dont understand this and just keep pulling and pulling, and they say "the door dosnt work" then i say "push" and suprise it works!

I dont understand why they dont understand that if they are pulling inward on the handle they dont realize that, that might be keeping the door from opening...

Back on topic, the drivers side rear on our explorer is strange as well, if they try to open it before i unlock it, and then unlock it it will not open, i have to go to the outside pull the handle, then unlock it again and they can open it from the inside.

Is this the same problem?

sounds like it's somehow an issue with the child lock located on the side of the door where the door latch is.

thats what i thought too, but i have played around with them, and nothing. Its not a big deal, i just have to be quick on the gun on the unlock, or what i usually do is not have them sit behind the driver.

Thanks guys,
it's not the child lock because both the interior and exterior don't work. When I hit the power lock to lock, it does and sounds right, when I hit to unlock, it doesn't go up all the way and kind of sounds like it is binding somewhere.
I managed to rip the door panel off from the inside and looked inside the door cavity, tried moving the different rods within, at least to open the door, but to no avail.

Not sure what I have to move to unlatch the door ??

reply 1 (a joke)

to spotdog14, maybe we should all turn on the child locks for the grown children that don't realize they have to push on a door to open it?

Reply 2 (Serious)

I have forbidden my daughter from even touching the door handle in the back, I will gladly open the door from the outside for her. so far it has worked and everything is working fine except the front drivers door.

reply to teamontl:

on the front drivers door (never had the back door apart) there is a linkage that goes from the lock selonoid, the tumbler, the button and I beleive the latch also (don't remember exactly). Mine did this when a something started to break inside the door. Thanks to my tinkering the thing finally broke that held the linkage in place. I now have the tumbler disconnected from the linkage and just use the keypad or wireless or another door to unlock. the selonoid works so the power does the work for me now.

I hope someone can give you a more definitive answer.

David

Here is a drawing from the 97 manual showing the rear door handle, latch and lock solenoid

97 Eddie Bauer - Rear Drivers door won't open..at all!

Update: I think I fixed my problem, after searching posts and finding info on the latch assembly and that little spring in there that holds the 'teeth' open. If anyone is interested, I took pics and and email them (don't know how to post them here)

Good luck
