okay so i'm looking into doing two things: going doorless and building an off road explorer. i have an 04 explorer xlt. first, has anyone attempted going doorless with their explorers? if so, any advice? second, i know i have to swap out the front diff if i want to be able to make it through a trail but i don't know what kind of diff i should swap with. also, what kind of lift and tires should i look into?

If you're making an all out off road rig. Look into full solid axle swap with 4:10 or 4:56 gears. Even 4:88 but I wouldn't put it on the road with anything lower than 4:88. That's my best advice. Now, if you don't have the funds for that (which is cheaper than IFS/IRS) hint hint* go with the BTF lift kit for your year explorer, get the upper control arms from him as well. Do a 1.5-3 inch body lift with 33 inch tires or 35 depending on whatcha wanna go through (mud, rock, etc) also look into getting a locker for the rear. Probably won't need one for the front. Keep posting!

My rig is just a toy/build i currently have no doors on mine right now and in the process of netting

theres a BUTT LOAD of threads on this subject...

just use the search.

I would wait for a SAS, go as high as you can without it first, and wheel it.
see where youre at.....after that if your not satisfied, start considering SAS.
whether it be D35 or D44 or D60 even...its a **** ton of work and time.

you can go 6ins in a 3rd gen......plus tire height

that's what I would do.
