I recently bought a 2000 5.0 mountaineer and it had a P1309 code. When I removed the camshaft synchronizer, this is what I found. Multiple cracks on the body of the camshaft synchronizer. I have no idea how many miles were on the synchronizer. The metal look like aluminum (non-magnetic) and my guess it is has overheated due to excessive friction (was relatively difficult to turn) and or the quality of the metal was poor or both. It may be hard to see in the pictures, but these are cracks in the metal, some going all the way through the metal. Thankfully, the "mechanic" who had installed this previously did not have it aligned correctly with TDC so it gave a code so I had to pull it to align it correctly and that is when I saw the cracks. Whether or not these cracks would have led to eventual catastrophic failure. I do not know, but I had already heard enough on this forum about Dorman synchronizers that I was going to replace it anyway.
