Dr. Jack

:us: Hopefully I am starting this thread in the proper place. I am following the ideas of other members to keep a log so to speak of the 92 Explorer now know as Dr. Jack.
It all started a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, oops, wrong story.
A while back in the spring/summer time frame of 2009. I was asked by an EF member if I ever do any 4wheeling, I told him I had done a bit in Death Valley but not much, this is when he intoduced me to the EF family. We made plans for me to join him as a rider in the CCR09 at Ouray. We did a pre-run in Moab where I meet Bronco2guy, Amy, and Chad551. Then on to Ouray where I meet a lot of fine peeps in the EF family. I had such a blast that I decided to start a project, I have always liked off roading but all the groups I meet seemed to have a "better than thou" idea.
Giving myself two years for the project, I started keeping an eye on the forum and looking around for ideas, then the 92 Explorer of Dr. John "Jack" Lobdell popped up on Craig's list in New Mexico, by following the forum I became aware of the sale, and by contact with other members I came to learn that this was a special vehicle from a special member. Lady Luck smiled on me, as I was able to use my brother's trailer to go pick up the vehicle. Robert rode with me and am I glad he did, his help was great. Got the rig back home and am now beginning to go over it, will keep upates as I go

Triangles instead of "L" brackets will improve the strength of the pivot area.

When the joint just won't hold
Or if it's bending under load...
Don't exasperate,
Triangulate!

Dumb rhyming bugs not gone yet  and this one sucks...

kool, got it, Thanks Dan!!!

Do a search and look at some bumpers what have been done here, and look up off road shops Jeep bumpers. I used a 1500 pound trailer spindle, but wish I had boxed it top and bottom so it didn't wiggle. I have had to make repairs twice due to stress cracks in the mounts.

Actually that will be a future mod!! Thanks for the info!!

It has begun at Robert's house. Tacking the mounting bolts in place, the tire was left on simply to make sure the bolts are in the right place.

Robert tacking the bolts in place, luckily he has a welding mask on and you can't see his ugly mug. :D

And I broke his mig welder. :p:

Now to run back to my house, forgot the plate to make the angles.

Well, it's gonna to have to be finished next weekend, cutting torch tip is bad, even after cleaning it, so we just drilled the alignment holes and then will finish next weekend. (and no we can't "run" down to the store and get a new tip, nearest hardware store is a little over 70 miles)

Drill, baby, drill!!

OOPS, drilled thru the vise on the drill press!!!

Since everything was put on hold, we just decieded to pull the dead tree down.

:D :D Yea,I was laughing pretty hard, the mig quit, but got the bolts tacked before it did, then when he wanted to use the cutting torch, it quit, and then I drilled right thu the vise on the drill press, but the tree came down right where it was suppose to, before we pulled the tree down we were trying to figure out, is the shop holding up the tree, or is the tree holding up the shop, his response was, "the shed is wired to the fence on the other side." Ah, baleing wire, comes in use for so many things.

The journey (and redneck hyjinxs) continues....... :D

That's great, Mike!! Hopefully we will see a RRDC (Rear Ramming Device Cushion) on that tire carrier of yours. :D

Thanks Dan!!! I was trying to explain to him the triangle type brace, and he had me confused, (we were looking at it at different points of view) but it was really funny when he fired up his torch and the cutting tip was clogged. He was getting ready to cut the plate into the braces. I got the blame for both pieces of equipment failing!!!! (but I did do the drill bit thru his vise)

The redneck hyjinx's continue!!!

The parts that have been cut up to make one longer tire carrier. And a brand new hitch that is gonna be cut to make a spacer.
