Drilling air box?

Does drilling holes in the stock airbox really make a difference or will it do more harm then good? I plan on getting a KKM but until then if drilling will help then I'll drill away.

Firstly it will help by allowing more air into the intake = better throttle response. Slight HP gains maybe.

More importantly it draws air from a location higher from the ground, and is less likely to suck water in.

It sounds pretty cool, and yes, there is a slight performance increase. Not a lot, but it's there.
 






Drill away!!! ...but give it a little more style than what Gerald did. :D

I used Dremel cut off wheels and put square/rectangular holes in mine
 






I only opened up the front side (behind the head light and the fender side below the mounting pins. Then removed the plastic piece behind the head light because the existing intake tube was no longer in the box. Free air flow from behind the head light and fender but the hot engine side is still blocked. I also used a dremmel with cut off wheels and looking at my air box you can't even tell it has been modified. Sneaky, isn't it.

This is also a good time to modify the wiring for your fog lights. If you do some searching you will find three ways for the light mod.
1. needs 12" of wire
2. done in the loom next to the air box you just pulled out, no extra wire needed. (My way.)
3. connect to washer relay so fogs are 100% independant of head light switch.
 






I did exactly what Wise guy did buy just cutting off the entire front of the box. Makes more sence than to cut holes thru the whole thing. I noticed a big difference in sound as the engine got louder when I got on it but as far as power I really didnt notice anything. I ended up getting an adapter and cone put on because I just wanted something new.
 






The only parts left on my airbox are the side next to the fender and the corners. I cut the whole front, engine side, and rear off. It made for alot better throttle response, but I did not notice it get much louder.
