Driver Side Headlight Won't Turn Off

Post number 9 has been selected as best answered.

Hey guys,
I have the exact same issue with the corroded wire on the module. HOW do you fix the one wire? Do I just pull out of the plug a bit and remove bad part of wire and stick back in? Not a mechanic so apologize for my ignorance

That said $275 for diagnostics is spendy.
To follow-up and let you all know I did find a broken wire that was keeping just the driver side light on...... and with it broken so close to the plug, I bought a full new wire harness for $27 off amazon, but only used one wire to replace the broken one. Took a little bit to figure out how to take the plug apart but it worked like a charm.
Thanks again for the help!

I also doubt that you have any recourse in that they did perform the diagnostics and no parts were replaced. In other words, you paid for a service and received it. Please report back with your findings. Thanks.

And yes I did tape it all back up nicely for anyone wondering. :)
Just curious. Did the battery saver program eventually turn it OFF after 10 minutes or did you ever leave it that long? Thank you.

Peter

Look at the picture in the first post.

The yellow wire is clearly corroded as it enters the connector. That is not good. Any discoloration or "CLR" is bad.

First step: find your harness as pictured and check your wires. Pull and tug see if any of them come apart with minimal effort. If the harness looks fine you will need a volt meter or something to check the wiring to see whats shorting out

Peter, yes the battery saver would shut the light off after ten minutes. That happened for a few months before I finally dealt with the problem and I feel like it weakened the battery over that time as the battery went dead once after sitting in a doctor's parking lot waiting on my wife listening to the radio on accessary. When she came out it was the dreaded click, click, click! No issue since but expect the battery will need replaced sooner than normal.

The right side Headlamp assy has 10 wires, the left 9. The extra wire is "address" and tied into the low beam.
The headlights are activated by the BCM (Body Control Module). Power comes from Fuses F48 and F50 in the battery junction box..

It is a very simple circuit. Power from the fuses goes into the BCM. FETs inside the BCM turn on to send power to the lightbulb. BCM is controlled from various inputs (autolamps, wipers, the headlight switch)

Your dealer was FOS if they said the headlight itself was the problem. BCM would be my guess.

I have a similar problem. The right headlight stays on. It doesn't EVER go off.
The foglights, running lights, interior lights work but the left headlight stays off & the right headlight is on permanently.
This just happened as my wife is currently driving from Dallas to NY & the car started having this problem yesterday. (12/6/22)

Check this post:

You may have a similar issue in the connector. Check for corrosion. That's my guess.

It's odd that the Battery Saver Program doesn't cut the power to the headlight after 10 minutes. When you mentioned the left headlamp stays OFF are you saying it works as it is supposed to under your test conditions or does it not come ON when it is supposed to?

My 2017 PIU just pulled this BS on me today after I went through a car wash. (The first car wash since I bought it a week ago ) The driver's side light was staying on. Weirdly my passenger light was flickering and very dim. I tried unplugging the driver's side but it would turn on again if I plugged it in. When I unplugged the passenger light then the driver's side went off immediately and would stay off unless the headlight switch was turned on. Seems like I need to dig into the connectors for corrosion. I'm guessing a common wire for the two is the culprit. I left the passenger connector unplugged hoping it will dry out possibly. I'll update if I find out anything.

you see the corrosion around that yellow wire at the connector in your picture? the wire is broken inside the insulation....if you take a pick and pull gently on that wire it will come right apart.....that wire as an open circuit will cause a single headlight to remain in the on position for 10 minutes after the car is shut off
My 2017 Explorer has the same problem with BOTH headlights. I’ve researched it a bit, and I feel confident the yellow LAN wire is my problem also, I just don’t know where to find all the terminations to figure out where I’m losing continuity.
Where is the BCM?
Where does the LAN wire connect to the BCM?
Does the LAN wire daisy chain on the headlight connector?

I did an Internet search for a 2017 and this came up for a 2016. I'm guessing they are likely the same.
"The body control module, or the bcm, on the 2016 ford explorer is located under the dashboard on the driver side towards the center of the vehicle."

Thank you for posting that video. I'm sure that will be of help to some of the members experiencing this problem.👍

Hi all! I just bought myself a used 2016 FPIU. I've always wanted a Crown Vic but I will settle with the FPIU.

There are a couple of issues I have been trying to figure out. The driver's side low beam does not switch off and I've read this post along with the YouTube video. I bought myself the scan tool and found the following:

I am not sure what else to look into for the driver's headlamp as the dealership I bought it from says they couldn't find any corrosion in the wires. Then again, I am not sure if they 'fully looked' for a corroded wire but I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt. Is there anything I am missing with the other error codes that might cause the headlight issue? Thanks in advance!

That also was my issue. I took apart the plug as best as I could to get a new Yellow wire in there. not all that happy with the out come but it is working for now. Does any one know where we can get a new connection with wires and I can replace the whole thing.
