Driveshaft Lamp

I've taking a 3D art class this semester and we've been making different kinds of sculptures. Our final project was to make some king of functional sculpture. Functional as in it serves some other purpose besides just looking nice.

So for mine I combined a driveshaft and a work lamp to make a pencil holder/ work lamp.

Here's a crappy cell pic. I'll get a better one once I get it back on Wed.

I ran out of time to finish it like I really want but once I get it home I plan to wire brush the driveshaft to get a little of the surface rust off them paint it with a clear coat to prevent further rusting. I'm also gonna put a coat of polyurethane on the wood to seal it and protect the wood.

I also have the other half of the driveshaft (it's the rear shaft of a 4x4 1st gen) and I plan to turn it into a standing lamp with a rim for the base of it. One day when I have a man cave they'll go in there.

Here;s a better pic of the lamp before I took it apart to finish it up.

Here's the shaft part with a couple coats of gloss clear pain on it to keep it from rusting more.

I'n gonna pick up some polyurethane for the wood base some tome soon. (any Recommendations on brands or how to apply? never used it before.)

And Here's the tall part of the DS with a flat part ground on it to drill a hole for the cord. Already put one about 1.5inches through the top.
