Okay... I finally got around to rewiring the stereo and amps in my explorer. Now that I have EVERYTHING on the inside OUT I have the chance to dynamat the WHOLE thing.

Trouble is, for a truck such as an explorer, it would cost a lot to do it. I'm willing to do anything myself. HOWEVER, a friend recommended a substitute for Dynamat.

Ice and Water Membrane. It is a roofing compound. Any roofers or whatever out there that know about this? Is it pretty much the same...I don't care if it's pink and says 'happy bears' on it...it's going to be covered by carpet. What else works that costs less?

BTW, I tried a small section of the rear, where the jack is located...I tried roofing tar, and tar/felt paper to cover. Worked okay...But in the summer my car would smell like a hot roof!

Would like to cover the entire floor, doors (inside too) upwards from the floor at the firewall area. Above the headliner etc...

Does tinted glass block sound better than regular glass....Just kidding!!!!! :)

Check out these alternates. I wouldn'r suggest using any sort of rrofing material, as it will probably smell in you car.

Brown Bread
RAAMat
B-Quiet Extreme
Hi-Temp Mastic
Cascade

Do a search for them on the forum to find various https.

And by the way tinted glass does block sound better. It's also more aerodynamic, so your X will be faster and more gas efficient. It will also change flat tires for you if you ask nicely. :D

I used the roofing material stuff that you mentioned (The Ice and Water membrane), and it works excellent. Check my sig, I have one heck of a system and no rattles whatsoever. Also, contrary to popular belief, it does not make your car smell when it gets hot. My car smelled slightly for a day AT MOST after I put it in. Not a big deal. What is a big deal is the fact that I only spent $80 or so, whereas others have gone out, covered the same area with dynamat or a competitor, gotten the same results, but paid A LOT more..

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You guys provided great help and quick response! Thanks again. I'm sure my wife will be pleased that I didn't spend $16,512,100,983 on dynamat.

A word for the wifes... Don't ask why we do this stuff...Just nod your head and say, "That's great dear" "Wow, that's neat honey"

My wife asked why I needed 1/0 gauge wire run to the back... I couldn't come up with a better reason than..it will make the stereo sound better. "Why do you need that?" She asks... I just turned her body around and gently pushed her toward the door to the house.

B94Sport.

I checked out your setup. It looks wonderful! I love the wiring job on the amp rack....really cleans up the bulk of the wiring that most people just leave tangled up around the amp.

Did you do that yourself? If so, you did a GREAT job!

As soon as I get my stuff ready I'll take more pictures and post them.

Yep, did it all myself. Design, building, install, everything :) It took a ton of time, but was well worth it. Thanks for the compliments!

i like it but theres one porblem with it....wellmore the pics, its so shiny and stuff i cant really tell what all it actually is...is that hidden shelf thats covered or something??

ok nevermind i figured out what it is.....

Alrighty then.

I purchased 200 Square feet of Owens Corning Weather Loc. This is the Water & Ice Membrane I mentioned before.

This is VERY thin material. And it's abrasive on the top side. You'd have to add (4) layers for it to be as thick as (1) layer of Dynamat.

Any ideas or suggestions? The roll was only $56.00 at Lowes. If I need more I can always buy it. Sure beats the $1,230 for Dynamat.

Is this stuff supposed to be this thin? Is there thicker material?

Thanks again.

Black Magic...

I did not receive an email... :( Just a email re: this thread.

This product looks great, looks like it will work, but I still am unsure. I don't want to just start unrolling it yet.

I'd like to dynamat the entire truck. Top to bottom.

Where do you live in Missouri?

email is:

Thanks,

Phil

keep us posted cause im interested to see if this works.
also, is it adhesive backed or what?

Yes, it has a wax backing that is removed. It looks and feels like 250 - 300 grit sandpaper. Black of course.

It's inexpensive, worth a try...But I was expecting more of a rubber compound...

I also used Ice and Water Guard. I am very happy with it. But there are a few precautions that I reccomend you take.
1. Clean all surfaces VERY WELL before you apply the membrane and allow enough time for it to completley dry.
2. Buy one of the cheap rollers and roll the crap out of the stuff (especially where it will be verticle)
3. Allow a day for it to set up before you put your carpeting and seats back in. That way there is no smell and it fully cures to the surface.
4. Dont use big pieces. Cut small pieces instead of larger ones and just slightly over lap each one.
5. More emphasis on rolling it. If you do inside your doors, which is where I really noticed it, make sure that the stuff is never going to fall down and latch onto glass.

Other than that, it's pretty self-explanitory and you'll learn all the techniques there are.

B94Sport & KEbert

Thanks for the positive reinforcement. I needed a little extra motivation before I started.

Since this material is VERY thin, and I have 200 sq. ft. to go around, how many layers should I have.

The rough sq. ft. of the interior of my 4dr exp. is about 55 square feet. (thank god it's not 55 square!! That would be 5,500 sq. ft.)

I would like to do the following.

ENTIRE area of the floor boards (Everything!)
ENTIRE area above headliner (Except beams)
ENTIRE area around and what I can reach inside doors

ALL THE GLASS......Right?

Just kidding.

Like I said before, I do anything once. If I don't like it when I'm done then I'll never do it again. However I just didn't want to screw up with this as it did cost a little, I wouldn't want to waste it and I didn't want to pull it back out.

Has any one used a heat gun with this to get it to stretch or bond better?

For those who would like to know where to get this product... Any home improvement store. The Home Depot didn't have any and didn't know what I was talking about. Lowes carried it, the 2 square box (200 sq. ft. is around 65 - 70 pounds.) 1 square would be about half that.

Cost is next to nothing compared to other products. Although Be-Quite Extreme looks pretty... About $35-40 for the smaller roll and $59 for the larger roll.

Again, thank you for all your help.

(BTW, cheap plastic rollers will break easily...Wooden ones don't cost that much more.) Or get a hard plastic roller with a metal shaft.

Thank you again!

Will send photos when finished. If any of you would like to sand wood after I install this I'll let you know. It is gritty!

Anyone have any ideas how to get a 5 year old to LISTEN!!!

or you could just be like me and let every one thing your back glass is gonna shatter or your roof is gonna pop off

Yeah I meant a wooden roller. They're only about 5 bucks. I didn't do my roof because mainly I didn't want to harm in any way my headliner. I don't hear any noise from there anyway so if you don't have to screw with your headliner I wouldn't reccomend it.
You should be able to do the entire inside of the doors. I did. Just, again, make sure it is super clean and rolled so it will never some off.

Phil, I have 165 square feet of Dynamat Extreme in my O1 sport.
