Equipment

hey i thought id bring this up because I'm sure some of the other not-so-hardcore ppl (like myslef especially) are wondering this question.. what does a vehicle need, in terms of equipment, for these trails? (flag, tow points, tow lines, CB/cell phone ... )

front and rear tow points, a CB is nice, a strap is nice, if you are new to offroading come and see what others use and why and ask questions. Just make sure you have tow points and make sure your routine maintnence is up to date.

I wish jasonb would chime in on this one.

Well ok.. I guess I will.
I thought Uwharrie was really easy. Heck I let a friend drive my rig the later half of the day just to get some excitement. It rained for like 3 days when I went and some the day on the trail. I still did most in 2lo and we did all the trails there and did not take bypasses. I am locked so keep that in mind, and I think I can drive at least pretty good. There was one hill (don't recall the name) that everyone got denied on but that's because it was completely wet muddy clay. On the other hand, that was one of the most fun trips I have had as far as the camping went. Some probably had to do with the people that were there (including a Russian with a lot of vodka) but Crawford's or any campground offers that.
Tellico does have trails that a "superstock" could do. I would really not want to be in a group that brought a 2wd to Tellico though. Anyone that knows the crowds that Tellico attracts can understand why I say that. Also, we are already getting looked down on bringing grocery getters to the trails. You can bet everyone in Murphy will know who we are after blocking the trails while yanking a 2wd every 20yds, and they won't like us. Trail 1 maybe and sure you could get down trail 5 or 6, buy you wouldn't make it up either.
The Montero that Josh mentioned... it was his first time wheeling. Bone stock except some fender trimming and 31" MTs and some low budget rocker protection and skid plates. He followed us everywhere, although slowly sometimes. He took the cable 2 time I think and we did 4,5,6,8 with a slight drizzle early in the day.

With that said, I'd say we make it which ever the most people are willing to come to. Tellico is a great time and the scenery is great and would be my first choice. I voted Tellico. Many of us know the trails there really good and could get a variety (not 2wds) through the trails there. My Samurai will be ready soon so I'll likely go wherever.

Your best bet Izwack is to maybe show up to a run in PA.. We run pretty much monthly at either Paragon or Rausch Creek.. Just don't do what I do.. Otherwise you'll break stuff like I do.

Ure has gotten much rougher.

This ledge is tall enough to make my explorer sit on the rear bumper pointing straight skyward.

and last trip Caleb had more carnage at URE than he had running at Tellico... He rolled on his side and then later busted the rear glass on a tree.

I tweaked a cross member and dented a spring hanger in.

and it took us forever to even get up to Kodak Rock. I promise there are trails that will chalenge everyone, especially in the wetness.

i want to chime in about URE...are chad and I the only two sticking up for this place?! ;) Anyway, URE is set up so that ANYONE and EVERYONE can run it and have a blast. Hel i had my first run ever there (the trip that chad is speaking about) and while Caleb on 35s ? flopped his VERY built rig, and busted a rear window, i was trucking along right in front of him the whole time (not when he broke his window) and i got out of there without a scratch. Trust us, URE can be VERY hard (if you choose to take the hard lines) but also the same trail can be done easily in a 2wd (if you take the bypasses) Every obstacle has some way to get up it safely and easily witout carnage if you listen to your spotter and for the love of soccer PAY ATENTION!!! I am still strongly standing behind URE as the run since it will obviously be the most friendly to our vast span of trucks. Chad, Caleb help me out here... (i know John would if he was around as well, he had a blast.)

From our yearly Moab planning threads....

----------
"all vehicles are also expected to be equipped with at least the basic required equipment listed in the Trail Equipment article. "
----------

Click on the link, read the article, and you will be well prepared for any run. As a beginner within a group of more equipped vehicles, all you need to worry about is having the "required" equipment. It's named "required" and not "optional" for a reason.

Flags are required at Paragon but not at the other areas we are voting on.

Tellico, Ok I am trying to decide to lift my limited, or to keep it stock just to prove Tellico can be done. I did this very same thing with Southern jeeps when I drove a stock TJ Jeep up slick rock. Yes, I just said that, but let me mention that I was winched through the boulders right at the beginning of slick rock and was dragged up the road after slick rock, but I did it!! Stock.

Ok, I am still playing around with my explorer to learn its characteristics so I can do this. Garrett has pointed out that most of my abilities for accomplishing these trails were the difference in the SWB. I do agree, I was coming from a stock jeep perspective. Sorry guys.

Garrett, I want to schedule a time when we can get together for a Tellico inspection sort of. Not necessarily in prep for the 10th Ann. Ride if even voted/not-voted for. A ride just for infomatible purposes.

If we decide on Tellico, I volunteer to be a trail boss for the mild-to stocker ride. :D

ps. July 15- rocks

Glad to see we have some more participation going.

So what about some more of the PA guys. Jeff--Would Chris come down? I've not heard or seen anything from him for along time. What about Lindsey would she come down with you. I'd love to see you guys again since it's been years now.

If someone from New England Explorers wants to drive me out there I will go. My X is not really setup for off roading yet. Work in progress. I just have to get together with John (Derocha)

he he i was just at URE today...

I attempted going up that in my explorer and i don thtink it can be done... it has a drop off on the other side of the ledge and i was catching my x-member or fame and getting hung up with all 4 tires spinning. Just for clarification the ledge is almost 4 ft tall.

If a group is planning on going to Tellico before the big trip (where ever it goes), I'd like to tag along. At least see what it looks like and meet some of ya'll.

Paragon! Paragon! Paragon! I don't want to drive too far! I can gaurantee I'll go to paragon, can't guarantee Crozet or Tellico. Most likely not. I think Paragon is very versitile for the stockers all the way up. -E

You sound like a baby... No one wants to drive to far and it doesnt matter if YOU show up. We are all making sacrifices and how fair is for anyone south of VA to drive 9-15 hours to get to paragon. Why not just get along and go to Crozet. Its called a compromise.

whewww.. its getting steamy up in this piece.

.

I'm in for ure or tellico, i'll be on 33's by then, so possibly crozet. i'll be running with a 3in bl, 33's and l/s. If you guys think that would be possible to handle crozet, then i'm willing to meet in the middle of tellico/paragon.
