I have a 2000 Mountaineer with 140k. The CEL has been on for about 4 months. One day as I was getting onto the freeway the truck started to stutter and almost stall when I step on the accelorator. Once I got it up to speed it moves fine but stutters when I have to step on the gas. It only does this when hot (after driving 80 miles or more) Autozone said the CEL was due to a bad EGR Valve. I replaced it (not as easy as it may look) and low and behold the CEL went off, for a few days. The symptoms have also returned. The error code now says it is the EGR sensor. Does this have anything to do with the real problem. I am not in an area that requires emissions testing and can live with the CEL as long as it runs reliably.
