Then turned the car off. came back later and the lights were off when car started. Backed up 100yards still in 4xlow but no lights. how do i disengage?

still stuck

Im not smart enough to do an operation like this should i just take it into a shop? what do you mean by rubber mallet?

I think he means bang on your transfer case with a rubber mallot. This may loosen something if stuck. Cheap easy check.

Yes about the rubber mallot. I haven't done the shift motor myself, but I wouldn't be driving around in 4Lo if I could avoid it. Hopefully someone with more experience with be able to give you a way to disable it to be able to drive to a shop.

????

i dont even know where to start looking guess im just better off taking it in somewhere but i dont think i have enough $$ to get it fixed

Try disconnecting your battery for ~ 15 minutes.

nope

ive tried everything, that wont work anyway the motor is probabley broken hasnt anyone else had this problem??

Yes, happens a lot. Here's results of a quick search I did for you.http://www.explorerforum.com/forums...d=373527&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

Are you sure you're in Neutral with you foot on the Brake when trying to switch out of 4Low??? Are your brake lights working (bad brake switch may cause problem). Resetting computer, Hitting Transfer Case w/mallet, etc are the ways people have gotten it out of 4Low w/o getting towed.....
