Ford 4.0 engine block serial number where is it ???

I am stupified I just can not find the dang block number I was told by the ford plant that it was near the engine mounts and could easily be seen from underneath, also the numbers I was told were not machined stamped but hand carved there (perhaps by chizle or something I don't know) and that the number on the block should reflect certain numbers from the vechicle vin# Update : I went to the local ford dealer and the servive rep chap there told me that it's a myth that ford stamps their blocks he said he never seen one on there before on cars he's worked on. does anyone know if this is correct ??? or what the **#$@! is no one compitent anymore
any help would be apreciated much thanks. the reason I need it is because I had an engine swap done at a strangers shop to save me time and hassle (bad move I know, should have marked it) but now I think the only thing that was swaped were the valve covers with the serial tags and the block is all I have left to confirm this. can't trust mechanics :fire:

i'm wondering the same thing, i recently recieved an explorer (97 V6 XLT vin X)
but after doing a bunch of work i've found the camshaft position sensors don't match, so now i'm wondering what i have, n what sync tool i should get

I don't know about individual block serial numbers. But if there are any, I'd think they'd be near the block casting numbers and letters or part number. I came across this page a while back that has an overview of Cologne V-4 and V-6 engines. According to it:

Locating the Block Casting Numbers & Letters

4.1.1: On left and Right:
When I say "left", I mean the left side when facing forward. Thus, the "left" side of the engine is the "driver's side" for LHD countries like the USA, and the "passenger side" for RHD countries like the United Kingdom.

4.1.2 Casting Letter:
The block casting code is usually a large raised letter cast into the block. It should be located at the rear of the engine block, to the right of the distributor.

Since the 4.0 has no distrubutor, it might be a little more difficult to locate.

4.1.3 Part Number:
The part number should be cast into the block on the left side. The first two digits in the part number are the last two digits of first the first year the casting was produced. "TM" appears to indicate the Cologne engine family. "6015" apparently indicates an engine block. The last two letters may indicate minor changes in the casting. "AA" seems to indicate the initial version of the casting.
