I am in trouble big time. I had to take the Explorer in to have the engine changed with a 1994 Exploreer engine with lower miles. My cylinder head on the original engine was slowly eating itself away with massive corrosion on the exhaust manifold and it also had high miles.

The new engine sounds and runs good but there is a rumble vibration when you road test it. It starts around 1500 rpm and fades slightly the faster you go. There was no noise before the engine swap and the transmission is still the same as well as the alt, starter all accessories etc etc.
Can anyone help with ideas as to what it can be?? Also there is no overdrive working now and my reverse lights have stopped working as well.... HELP!!:thumbdwn:

Double and Triple check to make sure you plugged all the connectors back into the transmission.

It starts around 1500 rpm and fades slightly the faster you go.
Always at 1500 RPM, regardless of which gear it is in? Does it do it in P/N?

Def sounds like the trans connectors could be misplugged. Reverse Lights and Overdrive are both found in connectors on the trans. Additionally, make sure you have the right computer to match the newer engine. The 1993 to 1994 have newer emissions systems than the 1991, 2 Oxygen sensors versus only 1 on the 1991.

Thanks very much for the reply. I will get the mechanic to recheck the connections he told me everythign was connected. There are a couple of extra connections from the 94 to 91 installation.

What is worrying me the most is the vibration on it he hasnt been able to pin that down as of yet...
Any ideas??

Harmonic Balancer?

My mechanic kept and used the original computer and I didnt get the other computer from the salvage yard. The one extra connection under the hood is on the drivers side and looks like a secondary windshield washer pump plug connector. I dont work on vehicles anymore hence having to deal with a mechanic.

Interesting about the harmonic balancer. I will dig out the haynes book and see what that is and does.

OK thank you for posting that. That is one area that sounds like a possibility. The vibration also happens in neutral as well.

If anyone can id the extra connectors I can go out and take a picture under the hood?

Post the pics, I can take a look at my 93

OK thanks for that... Just going to have some lunch and then I will go out with the camera and take pics..

Pictures

Just trying to figure out how to post pictures...

Until you become a paid member of the forum, you have to use an image hosting site such as flikr or photobucket and link the photo's by using the html tag code or clicking on the button in the msg box menu bar and putting in the url to your pic

Oh ok thanks I will upload them to webshots

This is the cable that has two plugs coming out of it that do not connect anywhere?

This is the third connector??

This is the fourth connector??

drivers side view of engine installation...

This is the Front view

I really appreciate all the tips and advice given so far! I called the mechanic and gave him the information and he said that the harmonic balancer fitted is the one that came with the engine not the one from my old engine. He wants me to bring it back tomorrow and he will try and swap the balancers out and see if that helps or not.
Thanks ,
Peter

The 1st pic is the only one I can get to come up full size, the others are non-clickable thumbnail pics. I cannot tell from the 1st pic where those 4 wires/two connectors exit the wire bundle, can you get a full sized pic of that and list the color codes for those 4 wires? from thier general location there in the engine bay, I'd guess at 2 sensors that you do not have on the 94 engine (but that goes against the logic of having a less complex wiring harness of a 91 as apposed to the more complex wiring harness and sensor bank of a 94 engine)

I tried to make the pictures bigger and now they are gone?

Hello Larry.

I went back out and got the color codes.
The two connectors form a Y shape and they tie intogether before crossing over the rocker cover on the drivers side and disappearing around the back of the intake manifold. I cant see where they run after that.

The smaller of the two connectors with an oval end has one black wire with a pink line on it and a purple wire with a pink line on it

The other two conenctors one of which is round with an orange insert has 4 wires a red, purple, orange and blue wire running to it The larger square connector has only 2 light blue wires running from it.
Hope this helps

Whats the URL to see the full size images? (web page where they are?)
