Hows everyone doing, so as some of you know im doing an auto to manual swap. Originally i was going to do it with the engine in the car as I have replaced trans like that before.however the oil pan gasket is beyond shot and I wanna check the timing chain. So to make things easier I was going to pull the engine and do the trans swap that way.... any way my question is while i have the engine out should i replace the oil pump? Its a 92 explorer with 311,000 miles on it, to my knowledge the engine is all original with the exception of the head gaskets that I did during winter. There is no sign that i can tell of it going bad.

Unless you have done the oil pressure gauge fix, you can't really see trends in oil pressure. But, with that mileage, and seeing as you are going to have the pan off... yes, I would. Which one? I will leave that to others, you have factory, OEM, regular or high volume, etc... You are in the $200 area, but you may get an extra 100,000 miles out of the engine. That's money well spent, in my opinion.

Yes, absolutely. ditto roadrunner's comment.

Most will vote for the high volume pump for better top end lubrication.

Where I live (in southern Oklahoma) the price for a high volume oil pump runs $130 then the pick up tube/screen is another $40. This seems to be the average cost. I have found one or the other a little lower in price.
