Switched plugs. Drove up the street. Turned the corner and truck took off. Pulled over and killed engine. Started back up and it hits 5000 RPM instantly. Throttle cable or linkage appears free and fine. No vacuum leaks I can see that are major.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

throttle position sensor? idle air controller?

My folks had a '92 escort that did this, in that instance it was the computer, apparently it had decided to fry itself.

I agree with Mud_Bug, test the TPS and IAC first, those would be the most likely canidates.

Thanks guys. Will get back to it in the morn. It is in a person's front yard right now!

Also, #5 plug was not seated properly. Oil on threads but electrodes were good. My guess. Truck had been idling erratically already.

Can someone explain exactly what the two above mentioned do? What does a TPS or IAC do, exactly? Might help me narrow it down with hands on.

Thanks guys. You have been a great help so quickly.

Been searching the forum. Most IAC problems seem to be more like misfiring. But a TPS does seem logical from reading up on them. Sorry guys, never had to work on them.

Still cannot find interior door pulls for a 91 XL. No power windows or locks. All the door pulls are crapped out. But I bought it because it does not have power. Sold my 2002 4 door Nissan Frontier to buy this. Hated it. Graduated HS in 1992. Wanted one then. Now I am getting this one up to par to give my boy. I love the Gen 1s.

Guys, I have to be honest. This question was about my friend's Lincoln V8. Knew many problems were brand specific and I own a 1991 X. So I posted here since I know how good and fast you are answering questions. Had to get him on the road quick, just got license back after 2 years. Ran from the cops for no reason and hit his point limit for suspension doing so. But just like a brother, my kids call him Uncle.

I posted this on the Lincoln Forum that I found after researching for hours.

UPDATE

Buddy got a little too f&^%d up drunk tonight and went off on me. Told me I was bugging the s^%t out of him while asking him to get a phone number so I could call a neighbor to borrow a scan tool.

Won't be answering his calls after I towed the POS with my Explorer back to my house to leak all over my cul de sac. 1 1/2 quarts a week. He pissed off the wrong buddy.

If I hear through another friend I will update the cause.

Thanks guys,

Dipchit couldn't even get a part right up at O'Reilly's. Cost me $3 in gas just to fix his F-up.
