Hi There. Can Anyone Help With A Problem With My 1997 Explorer. The Engine Management Light Is Staying On And The Engine Stalls As I Come To A Stop. Also When Idling The Revs Are Going Up And Down. The Ford Main Dealers Here (scotland-uk) Are Not Helpful, "we Dont Really Deal With These As We Dont Know Much About Them." Great Help That Is- The Explorer Is An Official Import Into The Uk!!!! Could It Be A Clogged Up Fuel Filter????? Any Help Much Appreciated, Many Thanks.

Welcome.

The first thing to do is to get the codes read. This will tell you what is causing the 'Check Engine Light' to come on. It may not directly tell you what is causing the stalling. You could check the IAC and it probably won't hurt to clean it anyway. But the IAC does not put out a code. The dealers here don't seem to know anything about explorers so it is a DIY job to keep them running.

Might be worth getting the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) cleaned , quite easy to do DIY with some carb cleaner http://www.explorer4x4.com/tips.htm#mas

you can get a code reader(OBDII type) quite cheap from the US Ebay site you just need to find someone who will post to the UK, mine cost about £25 if I remember correctly. You might find a local garage that can hook its diagnostic equipment up to your Explorer and read the code also .For 'stealers' stink here in the UK

FWIW

I had the same stalling problem with mine (1999 UK), but not with the engine management light on, local Ford Dealer uploaded new engine map - problem went away

If you '97 has the SOHC 4.0 engine, the issue may be the Intake Manifold O-Rings. Search for 00M12 and 01M01 for extended warranty information regarding bad parts on the early SOHC engines. I'd also suggest cleaning the IAC, and getting the trouble codes read. If you get the codes, let us know what they are and we can narrow down the possible causes.

seems like an IAC or MAF sensor problem to me. But then again, without the codes I'm at a loss. Seems like one or both of those parts could be bad and it may just need a general tuneup... take care
