Engine Stopping

This is my first post here. I am 16 years old. I have a 1991 5 spd 4x4 with manual diff and locking hubs. The issues started when the engine ran rough and then stopped on the road. Attempted to restart but kept stopping after 10 seconds multiple times. Tow truck was needed. We replaced the A/C Compressor which was locked up and dragging the belt causing the engine to shut off. Along with the A/C Compressor, they replaced the belt, belt idler, and belt tensioner/pulley. After that, it ran fine for a week, Then,` the car quite in my driveway.. Now when I turn the key, the engine cuts off in 2 to 3 seconds. Starts fine, sounds fine, but shuts off after 3 seconds. It repeated this several times. Any ideas on what the issue is?

I would start by checking the fuel pressure.

We started an entire forum just for these trucks many moons ago… you came to the right place


Check to make sure your crank sensor is plugged in fully and the wire is not pinched

Working on the serpentine belt area they could have disturbed the crank sensor wire or connector

Check fuel psi, that is the number one thing. You must have 36 psi at the rail when the key is turned to “run” the fuel pump should prime for a couple of seconds and build pressure

The other suspects are the eec and fuel pump relays
1991’was a long time ago your wiring harness and relays are old… the connections get corroded and loose and can cause these issues

Relays can be pulled,‘replaced and connections cleaned and confirmed tight

Goes for fuel pump and eec fuses

Your relays are mounted underneath the under hood fuse panel there are 3 relays one is for the pcm power distribution one is for fuel pump Control and the third is for your heater blower motor

So two questions to get us started

One. Do you have a check engine light when you first turn the key?

Two. What is your fuel pressure?

Thanks for the reply Rick and 410Fortune. I played around with the connector to the crank sensor, and started it. It now idles like a clock (without engine light). I will try driving it around this weekend when I have time to deal with a potential breakdown. Thanks!
P.S. As of right now I have no way of checking fuel pressure, but will get the sensor if the need arises.

Harbor freight sells a decent fuel pressure tester for around $40
It you can “rent one” From auto parts store, basically you buy it but bring it back for a refund later.
Most auto parts stores offer this service
