I hear all this talk about the 5.0 yet after further investigation the only thing that I can find is a 4.9. Is this the same motor or not. Do they just call it a 5.0 because it sounds better? And what is the deal on GT 40 heads? By the way this is going in a 2000 Explorer 4x4.

The 5.0 is technically a 4.9L (4949cc). Because it is not 4950cc or higher, some will show it as a 4.9L. However, don't confuse the 4.9L V8 (302ci) with Ford's old 4.9L 300ci I-6.
