I am waiting on a 2022 XLT that should be in this week. At the time of the order, I didn’t want to add the cost of the 20” wheels but I’m really regretting it. Has anyone negotiated new wheels on the lot or done some sort of exchange on the lot for better wheels prior to driving off? I’m not sure if it’s even a possibility but I would rather do it now and just get what I want upfront rather than replace good tires In a year just because I want another kind/size (I got the standard 18” wheels).

Are you asking about swapping wheels with another vehicle on the lot? I asked my dealership manager about this very thing. I was looking at a Lincoln Nautilus and the package I wanted came with 21" wheels. I didn't want those and asked if I could get 20" wheels put on instead. The answer was NO due to possible warranty issues. When a vehicle leaves the factory, it has a specs list attached to the VIN. Also, swapping wheels from one vehicle with another will likely cause other issues.
If you are talking about buying a set of 20" wheels then that is a different scenario. You might be better off going to a tire/wheel shop and seeing if they would be willing to give you a credit on the existing wheels. I was able to do that when I got my 2011 Limited. I was able to get a credit of $80/tire on a set of Yokohama tires.
You also want to keep the maximum diameter variance to no more than 3% compared to the OEM.

You could order another one with the wheels you want. I doubt the dealer would care as he would have a unit to sell.
