Well I'm still deciding on what series of Flowmaster I should get.

I have a V6, 4.0L but I want a deep rumble, but nothing TOO loud.

I've heard "go with the 40!" or "go with the 50!".. I also heard size has to do with the piping. The bigger the louder.

I know NOTHING about exhaust. What combination of muffler and pipe size should I go with to get that "deep rumble" without being deaf at high speeds or waking up the neighboorhood.

Thanks..

here you are

It started out one day when a friend had custom bent duals on his explorer. Well to make it short I got custom duals on my explorer when it had 55,000 miles on it a flowmaster 50 was used and twin side by side 2 1/4 aluminum pipes and the thing sounded weird, but when I put it to the floor man it sounded awesome like a passing v8 mustang at full throttle and it moved. When I had it in second at thirty miles punched it, sixty came up in two or three seconds. It really flowed great at 2500-4900 rpm, but there was not much torque unless I got on it. The sound when not driving fast sucked but it moved and sounded badass when smashed. Oh, those were the good days. By the way I had Bosch plugs and wires, plus the KKM true-rev and Mobil fluids throughout.
Why do I say this, because the only way to save an engine is babying it for life with maintenence.

i'm a exhaust freak

When parked and I hit it ,it would be like blah! blah! blah! pop! pop! pop! but when driving nicely it would only rumble when I wanted to hear it.
Also when I warmed my truck up outside my house I definitely could hear it running,
but go for it .

Let me say this do not listen to anyone else, I am an expert, just ask me how many different systems I have used. From gibson, to borla, to custom, to glasspack which was horrible, to dynomax, to flowmaster, to turbo packs. I have alot of interest in this, to tell you how serious I am I have read four published books on modifing exhaust! Yeah sickening isn't it.

Well.. I want it to sound good all the time. A lot of people say duels will sound bad. I've thought about only a single. Sound is my biggest problem..

I want it to sound nice all the time, not just when I floor it.

My Magnaflow has always sounded good at all speeds, and through all my mods. I have a 2.25 non-mandrel tailpipe. Magnaflow is usually quieter than Flowmaster, but sounds great!

mild

to go mild stay away from flowmaster 50 or 40's and go with 70. Magnaflow is also another great mild performance muffler

Mark,

A Flowmaster 40 will sound good. I've been running one on my 91 4.0 for a while. It's not too loud, it's just right.

A Flow 50 is not as loud as the 40, and the 40 is really not that loud. So relax and buy the 40, you won't be disappointed.

I'd stay with the stock setup, single in, single out. And I'd stay with the stock size 2.25" piping, before and after the muffler. If you go bigger, you'll tend to lose low end torque somewhat. And with a basically stock 4.0, you don't need any bigger diameter pipe.

YOU ARE RIGHT

Duals are loud and a single 2 1/2 is what suits my tastes.

What about the Flowmaster 40 delta? I've been thinking about that..

It seems to be in between 40 and 50.

good choice

Delta flow will probably suit you just right. Many mufflers out there have interior resonance, but the mild flowmasters like the delta series keep it to a minimum. You have to remember this technology was intended for exhaust octaves of eight cylinder engines, unless you get a explorer- specific muffler.

Mark,

I asked myself the same questions you're asking before I decided to go with the regular Flowmaster 40.

The 40 DeltaFlow will be quieter than the regular 40, but should perform about the same. The 40 Delta reduces interior resonances, especially around 2K Hz.

The choice comes down to personal preference. If you want a more aggressive "throaty" sound, I'd go with the regular 40. Again, I've been running one for a while and like it, it's not too loud or obnoxious by any means, inside or outside the vehicle, but it does provide a nice, aggressive "growl". Honestly, I thought the 40 would be louder than it actually is. A Flow 40 on a 4.0 V6 Explorer is nowhere near as loud as it would be on a Mustang 5.0 V8 with true duals.

But if you don't want to hear such an aggressive exhaust note, especially inside the vehicle, then go with the 40 DeltaFlow. Consider also that the DeltaFlow mufflers are more expensive than the regular line.

Heck, the way I finally looked at it, if I didn't like the Flow 40, I wasn't out but about $100, including installation. So I just told myself "Go for it". I'm glad I did.

One thing I noticed is that if your muffler is a single out and you put a Y pipe on to run duals, it will most likely not sound as nice. I have a MaxFlow with dual outs and twin 2.25 inch pipes. You heard what it sounds like at our last meeting. I think it’s not too loud but still gives a deep rumble. Go to Iggy’s and they’ll square you away.

Oh yeah, when anyone gives you advice to not listen to anyone else, never take that advice. Always seek as much input as possible. The more information you have on a topic the better you are prepared to make your purchase/modification. Even “experts” can be mistaken or biased towards a particular product.

Just my 2 cents

Sound is such a subjective topic. I had a custom(local muffler shop) cat back installed with 2.5 " piping exiting in the stock location with a generic 'turbo' muffler. It sounds great all the time. Not really loud, just deep.

2.5" and Turbo

I'd have to agree with F'nBob! I toyed with a bunch of things, but my muffler guy, whom I've known quite a while, told me that for the 4.0L V6, that anything larger than 2.5" was no benefit, and actually might even cause too little back pressure when coupled with a high flow Muffler. Also said too big a pipe with the V6 motor wouldn't sound as good. He could have charged me more money for the 3". but felt that wasn't the way to go. We used a Dyno Max turbo. and a custom mandrell bent 2.5" pipe, that fits nice and tight ( a real benefit when offroading. Seen too many muffs and pipes as Trail Trash!).
