When accelerating my V8 2002 Explorer stutters like there is a fuel supply problem. I don't believe it is a diff or transmission issue as it doesn't happen all the time ... only when stepping on the gas. Has anyone else had this problem and more importantly, fixed the problem.

Is the check engine light on?

When is the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

Response

The "Check Engine Light" was on and Ford replaced the EGR valve and it is now off ... but the surging continues. Whilst the car was with Ford I asked them to check the fuel pump and filter and they stated they were both good. I am not convinced they examined them properly as it does feel like a fuel supply issue.

misfires cause that symptom on this engine. check for any coolant leaking into the plug wells.Very common to have an intake manifold leak.

Second could be a dirty MAF sensor, lots of info online. A scan tool can give clues, but just go ahead and clean it. Usually the problem is on acceleration. No codes will be set until it gets really bad.

thank you

thanks for the guidance 96eb96. I will talk to my mechanic and have this checked. might change the MAF Sensor just for the hell of it. will post once mechanic has looked and hopefully resolved.
