explorer 4wd drivetrain in 1965 fairlane

Hey Ford lovers, I have a '65 fairlane 500 wagon that I want to make 4wd or AWD. does anyone have suggestions for a drive train that will keep it as low as possible. I will fabricate all necessary alterations. I want to use Ford drive train at all costs, with a 302/5.0. thanks.

95-01 Ford Explorer with 5.0L/4R70W/BW4404 (AWD) is what was stock. The BW4406 bolts up in place of the 4404, and gives you a REAL 4x4 (4Hi/4Lo) transfercase.

I was able to pick up a totalled `97 Explorer for $450, off craigslist. I have since purchased a Navajo for $150. So deals are out there. If it's wrecked, it'll be cheap.

That would be the EASIEST way to do it. Luckily the motor will mount as a stock Windsor motor would have....driveshafts, and electrical will have to be worked out though.

Welcome Jeff, and the Explorer frame etc will not go under any body and still be low like a car. I think the only way to keep it low is to install the front drivetrain as a subframe, and cut up the floor to make room for the front shaft and transfer case. That means giving up interior space, and still ending up a bit higher than stock. I don't know how low it could end up, that will depend on how things fit around the front suspension and differential.

You can use coil springs in front in place of the torsion bars. It just takes a new upper shock mount which has been done. Good luck,
