I think I'm cursed. A couple days ago I was blessed by having my 4WD low planetary gear blow up, locking up my transfer case. This resulted in a broken transmission output shaft. The dealer wants $2,700 to fix it. So it looks like the explorer might be on the used car lot. So my delema now is should i go for a older model Explorer (91-94) or should I fix the transfer case and transmission.

Really and truly, the main base of concern for the Explorer is the transmission and transfer case, I've seen no other chronic problems.

If you ask me, go ahead and fix it.

i think you should fix it. At least you know then you'll have no problems with the tranny or T-case for a long time. i just paid $2700 to have my tranny replaced, but i like my truck and know I will have no problems with the tranny for a long time. if I do I have a warentee!

BTW: How are those JBA headers?

I like the JBA's. I got them for a decent price and they are very high quality.

Do they add noticable power? Gas milage? ALso do you have stock cats or is everything high flow?

I don't know if it will fit, but I have a xfer case from a '92 for sale for $150.00+shipping. It's in good condition.

PunkChild-
sorry to hear of your misfortunes! if it's any consolation, some crazy old voodoo gypsy woman must have put the hex on my truck too because s**t like that happens to me all the time. how many miles does your X have?? while fixing the transfer case & trans situation may seem like the least expensive way to go right now... you can't make a really old truck (like mine) new again, no matter how many parts you replace - I found that out the hard (expensive) way.

I'm sorry to hear that about your truck. I hope you get it resolved soon.

Regarding the JBA headers, did it improve your exhaust note, power and mileage? Thanks!

Thanks for all the sympathy. I paid for the truck to be fixed, but I am looking at trading it in. In reply to AaronE19 my truck has 54,000 miles on it. And on the headers they made my exhaust a little louder, and I have no clue about milage because i have the dreaded lead foot syndrome. As for power I can tell they gave me more but I don't know how much, haven't had time to dyno it. I need to drive a stock truck to see how much the power is improved.
