Explorer Navigation Tracking Problem

So, I just picked up my 2012 Explorer and I already have a problem. The navigation system thinks the car is in Lake Michigan (nearest city is Chicago - I know where the EX is built) even though I live near Miami.

The screen displays no GPS (x across the GPS letter) as if there is no GPS signal. Huh? I drove 30 minutes around the metro Miami area on the highway (trees and building not an issue) and it cannot find any GPS satellites? You got to be kidding?

Any idea on a fix? I already did a master reset and that did not do it. I also removed SD card and re-seated it several times.

I am leaving on a trip tomorrow and may not have time to stop by the dealer. Who can I call?


$44k and the navigation doesn't work. My $200 phone has been more reliable!

I have question is the time showing on you screen if so then you know the gps is working, if the time is being displayed like -:-- then the gps isnt working and possibly what could be that when you car was being built that maybe the worker either forgot to plug the wire into the nav or did not push the gps connector in hard enough

when i brought mine home wednesday night and i finally touched the nav screen, it also said i was in michigan....i fiddled around with addresses and settings and what not and it finally showed the right location.

i hate the nav on this car it loses gps all the time even wen not under obstacles and sirus to sometimes i should bring it to the dealer and make them check it

Would guess that the GPS has changed location by several hundred miles without being on. When first turned on you will see the last know location.

Some GPS receivers need to be Reinitialized to re-acquire the Sats for you new location. Depending on the receiver and a clear view of the sky this may take several minutes. Would think that the dealer would have made this a part of the vehicles prep procedure.

This also happens with my hand held gps when I fly in an airplane for a long distance. Sometimes it may take several minutes to acquire the Sat data in order for it to show your actual location.

To verify that your GPS is working go to the MFT diagnostics mode to see the vehicle GPS information.

To enter this mode do the following:
- Make sure there is no CD in the system
- Set MFT to AM/FM
- Press and hold the eject button and...
- Immediately after press and hold the right arrow on the center wheel while still holding the eject button
- Hold both buttons pressed for about 12 seconds
- Screen goes black and MFT enters diagnostics mode

Seems like you found another worthless dealer and/or sales rep. He/she should have reviewed MFT and Nav with you, paired your phone, verified you equip., etc. Worthless and lazy.....take it back and make them give you proper customer service.

Did you check the the MFT diagnostics mode to check the vehicle GPS information?

Just interested to see what is there. If GPS is bad the # of satellites should be zero. Would be interesting to see what the Lat. and Log. is.

Maybe you can try disconnecting the battery and leaving it off for several minutes to see if that helps?

Someone in another thread had the problem with the GPS having them in Chicago and the above trick worked. I am not sure though if the other person had the X across the GPS thingy.

Have 2011 explorer limited. GPS stopped working less than a month after bought it. took to dealer said it was antennea so replaced it. worked for 2 days than stopped working again and got gps X. back at dealer again of course when i drove it today to dealer gps worked fine. if i had to do over again would tell my husband don't get 2011 explorer wait to see if new works. as is husband is now sick and i will need gps to take him to unfamiliar specialist. would like to know how many other gps do not work on explorer and what ford is doing about it.

The GPS crossed out with an X means it does not have a GPS signal, i.e. it has not acquired any signal from any GPS satellite. Stay stationary, and wait until the navigation system has acquired a GPS signal (i.e. the X is gone).

Driving around while it is still looking for a signal will make the process take longer.

This is my Explorers GPS screen.

And the Garmin I bought.

Somehow, the $160 garmin knows where I am, and can get a signal(full signal, actually), while the $900 Ford system has no idea where I am. It's weird cause some days it works fine, other days it's completely lost.

Did your navigation system start working for you? If not, the only thing I can suggest you do is take your Explorer back to the dealer. They will need to run tests on your GPS module to see what's wrong.

I just got a 2012 a few days ago and had the same issue as RX7 - GPS x'd out and maps showed me driving around aimlessly in Chicago (I'm in VA). Master reset did nothing, but a battery disconnect for 4 minutes solved my issue. GPS works fine now.

That is totally pathetic.....and we paid $900 for this POS? This is really my only gripe and the slow MFT response but for pete sake this was suppose to be a feature!

I had a similar thing a few days ago. The icon for the car was going a different direction and a different road than I was on it was incredible! Eventually after about 5min we intersected and from then on it was OK.

This is a joke and a black eye for Ford.

Not impressive at all. Every time I get close to pulling the trigger on an order I see things like this and start second guessing myself all over again.

Other than the Nav, the car is terrific. Just don't get the Nav and you'll be fine. I even told a woman who was asking me about upgrading her older Explorer to a new one to not waste her money on the Nav.

I think this is going to end up in court, because I flat out refuse to keep the car unless they can fix it.
