Ford Explorer SPORT 99
Hi, I thinking about buy explorer 2door sport. Im living in Europe (Slovakia) so there are only few of them. But there are one 99 pre face lift and one 00 face lift. I want to ask. Is there some difference in engine, trans or driveline? Couse I did a testdrive on that 2000 sprt and it is awsome! But 99 (body) I like much more. So If te 99 (wich I want to make a test drive soon) is the same instead exterior body parts, I really want this old school more :)

Thanks for answer!

There are no significant differences in the 99-00 engines. I assume you are looking the 4.0L SOHC V6 engines? (I don't know if the 4.0L OHV V6 was still available in 99-00 overseas. I believe the OHV was still available in the states until 2001.

Here's the thing... The SOHC V6 engine is a lousy design. It is not a matter of if you will have timing chain problems, but when. People have reported having TC problems with as little as 75K on their SOHC's. The guides break. Then the engine has to be removed from the vehicle to access the right side chain components. This involves a lot of labor and quality replacement parts are also expensive. Plus, with the relative rarity of these vehicles overseas, finding an experienced mechanic to work the SOHC engine may be difficult. Engine repair costs typically exceed the value of the vehicle.

Honestly, I would strongly advise you against buying a Ford with the SOHC engine. If you can find one with the OHV V6, buy that instead. The OHV V6 makes less power than the SOHC, but is a much more reliable engine of a conventional design.

Thanks, yes I know this problem with TC. We have here good mechanic, he is specialist for explorers only. I know that, I have to do it soon when I buy one. All 2 doors sport here In Europe are from USA. Only 5 doors were produced here in Europe... Ok so you think the 4.0 Sohc engine in 1999 is the same like in face-lift 2000. What about transmission etc... Thanks!
