I did some searching and didn't come up with much. My wife has a '91 Explorer that she hates and we are going to buy her a '06 Aveo pretty soon to get around in. Once we have her new car, she told me I could do "whatever I want" with her old '91. The body is kinda ugly and the interior is also... so I am seriously considering parting out the entire body and a various other small parts I won't need and building a single seat truggy out of it. Anyone have any pics of a truggy built on an Explorer platform?

I figure its got FI... and the 8.8 isn't a bad rear axle.. so I could probably make it into a fun little rig for not much $ at all. Ditching all the weight of the body would help with performace a LOT. I'd do a spring over in the rear and whatever-would-be-cheap-and-make-it-level with the TTB up front. I have a bender and will have extra tube after I finish my K5 cage project to make the Ex cage with. With no body in the way, I wouldn't need much lift at all really to fit whatever tires I think will survive (prolly 35s, I already have some on-hand). Anyway, I'm rambling... question is, anyone have pics of a similar project? I searched for "truggy" and "buggy" but didn't come up with much that was actually Explorer-based.

There was a mountaneer truggy on ebay a while back, but i didnt save the pics.

Here is one that sounds sort of like what you're talking about. It was owned by "Michael" on this site, but he sold it to Trckmagik, also on this site (in case you want to find more pictures).

If you were to do this, I'd personally ditch the TTB for a nice d44. That way it'll be really capable offroad and you can go bigger later on (bigger tires). The TTB can be capable, but it takes a lot of work (ext. radius arms, cut and turned beams, etc.)

really capable isn't the goal... cheap is. ;)

I have a 1-ton'd K5 truggy on foh-dees for real wheelin. ;) I think the massive loss of weight will help the ex more than anything. Amazing how much the tub of a rig weighs!

thanks for the tips... I'll see if I can get more pics for 'em. That is a cool rig that guy has... but he kept his tub. I'm talking nuttin but tube.. like a comp rock buggy in appearance just not nearly as capable or expensive!

Mine is mostly tube now. No tub in the rear, but it still has the front portion (clip)
